Hi. so my iphone 3g 16GB stops picking up WiFi, and then the outer buttons stop working and eventually the headphone port.
Also inserting a SIM card, works, but the iphone wont detect a sim and when I didn't take the sim out I couldn't hear calls, and they couldnt hear me unless I used the speaker phone option.

right so I send to apple, who now say, oh red tab, we cant help
so I take it apart, as im sure i'll at least know some of the problems, being a person who can blindly build and overclock a watercooled PC.

so i see the headphone flex cable (which as you will know is connected to all the outer buttons) has snapped in half!

a quick ebay leads me to spending 8 on a new one. now i put the iphone back, so that i know i can put it back, until the new flex cable comes through, but putting the number 3 flex cable is annoying to put in. using a screw driver and half an hours worth of patients, loosing screws, and finding i have an extra screw, and one that wont fit properly lol, i get number 3 in, but some of the black has come off and i can see copper... mmm i think, im sure till be okay or so i think of my self,

right so i put it together, and as i cant turn it on morally due to no power button i put the iphone on the wall charger, hear a beep for it coming on, but all i see is white screen.

now the flex cable (the headphone one) was only half snapped, but i fully snapped it. did this cause this, or did flex number 3 cause it?

also what does the flex 1, 2 3 and 6 do?

also i know this wont fix my WiFi problem, (well hopefully) but will it fix the lack of simcard recognition and the phoning problem?

Sorry for the long post, but im hoping i can get some expert help, and then i can help the community

If you've got water damage then there could be plenty of problems and your not going to find them by looking. Everything would have to be probed.

    #1 - LCD

    #2 - Digitizer

    #3 - Earpiece / Proximity sensor

    #4 - Dock Assembly

    #5 - Headphone flex cable

    #6 - WIFI antenna.

mmmm ok cheers for taking your time to post. but there was no white screen before opening it, so why would there be one after?

Also, i have not put my phone in water before, the closest was some smoke from shisha (hookah) getting on my iphone.

Its just odd that all those issues pop up.....usually only associated with some type of moisture least its most likely.

If the LCD is completely white and wont show anything....double check #1 as its the LCD may have damaged the LCD though taking it apart, its fairly fragile.

lol, well the main problem was the wifi, the other things stopped due to the snapped flex cable (i hope).

if i put the iphone together without the number 3 cable will it turn on?

^Yes, #3 only controls the earpiece and proximity sensor....otherwise the phone would be completely operational.

so if number 3 broke it wouldnt kill the screen and turn the screen white?

i didnt disassemble the screen part only the logic board.

would completely snapping the number 5 flex make the screen turn white?

    No and no.

Course you could have damaged the mainboard i guess.

its so odd, i was soo careful.

mmm is installing number 1 an easy one to install?

oddly itunes picks up my iphone. even with the whitescreen. so the logic board is still working presumabley?

    ^Sounds like its doing something.

The screen is most likely a damaged LCD. Even a slight "flexing" will damage it.

how odd. i have no sim in my iphone so i can only do the emergency thing. so even with the white screen i decided to slide across and randomly press the screen, and its dialling these buttons, as what i can hear form the speaker!

so what could the problem be now?

Just because the LCD is blown doesnt mean the digitizer (touch screen, mounted on the glass) and everything else wont work.

    Its still the LCD.

hi well i replaced my headphone flex cable, and put it togther. nothing on the screen what so ever.

itunes used to recognise mine but wouldnt recognise the sim, it does now, so thats all good. restored it. but no screen.

the proximity cable is scratched, so could it be that, or the LCD screen?

The proximity cable has nothing to do with the screen either.

    Its still the LCD.

    ok cheers

right but now thats its not even showing up on the screen, and i cant hear buttons being pressed, does that mean that its digitizer is also bust? also after putting the cables in, when i switch the silent button, still no buzzez, though i managed to put the iphoen in DFU mode, so does that mean its power button works?

Its really hard to say without a screen. I wouldnt do anything else until you have a working LCD.

It could be stuck in DFU mode, thats why no vibrate or sounds....but who knows. Could be something else. You really need to see whats happening.
