I've read about the differences in the 2g vs 3g/s usb cables and that the wiring isnt the same, the pin address's are different. Problem is between my family we have about 20 of these usb cables laying around our house. How can I tell the old ones apart from the new ones? Is it as simple as the ones you have to push the side buttons to unplug from the phone and the ones you can just pull out?

If you use the old ones you could risk bricking your phone =P

Well my phone's been charging fine since I got it in Late August last year and I alternate between my old nano plug, my sister's old touch plug, and a 2G plug my friend gave me.

Oh and my 3G plug of course
