I've been reading this forum for quite some time now, but somehow I never had to post anything.

I modified my iPhone 3GS because I didn't like the feel of the plastic back. It took me a couple of month to do it, and as I never dismantled an iPhone, this forum was a good help to learn something about the iPhone's hardware.

Basically I designed a new back cover for the 3GS. I had the original cover measured digitally, and I then started to draw the new cover in CAD. It's made out of a special titanium alloy that is RF transparent. I had tried aluminum but that was a complete disaster.

All in all I'm very happy with it, although there are some little things I need to fix before everything fits perfectly.

Here are some pictures of the latest prototype, i hope you like it!

    Cheers, Martin.

UPDATE2: Since so many people asked, I would like to clarify that this project is a modification of my personal phone, for private use, and that it isn't for sale and won't be sold. Unfortunately it is not possible to buy this mod or the CAD drawings. However, thank you very much for your terrific support, I appreciate it very much!

VERYY NICE!!!!!!!! If I was you once I got the dimensions right, I'd start selling!!! Those would sell like hotcakes (figuratively speaking, hotcakes no longer sell well so they'd sell better than hotcakes...)

thx luckily the costs weren't too bad, I did most of the work myself, but the measuring of the original cover was the priciest thing. Also I'm a student, so I get a lot of discounts ;-) All together probably not much more than a new Iphone 3gs.

Thank you for all the nice replies, I'm very happy that you guys like it!! The pictures show my personal iphone, and unfortunately it is a prototype and not for sale. If there should be a possibility to buy something similar in the near future, you'll be the first ones to know ;-) maybe i'll try to make a short video and better pictures this week, so that you can see it next to a normal iphone, but I'm very busy at the moment because of my exams at university.

Hey Martin what CAD program did you use? Would you wanna share your files? I'd be curious to see if this could be rapid-prototyped and then casted.

Look awesome, but Yes the silent switch slides the wrong way. Hard to believe it is real?

well I wouldn't call it "wrong way" I had to turn it around 90 because the area there (due to the straight sides) is quite small, and the original wouldn't fit anymore. But it's true that it takes a minute to get used to when you see it the first time.
