So I noticed today when I pushed slide to unlock I didn't get any noise from the phone, I tried making a call and got nothing out of the earpiece. I plugged in my headphones and can use the phone with no problems, it can also be used on speaker phone. My guess is that the earpiece speaker is bad, any other thoughts? My warranty just ran out the 20th of this month. I'm going to take it by the genius bar and see if they can do anything at all about it since it is recently out of warranty. How difficult is it to replace an earpiece speaker for the iphone 3GS if they won't fix it? Can you even buy those things?

    Thanks in advance.

When you turn the volume up or down does it just say ringer or does it have headphones in brackets?

Then there may be a piece of dirt or something in your headphone jack making the phone think you have headphones plugged in.

I woke up this morning with the same problem. I've got an iPhone 4 that has worked beautifully since the day I got it. Hell, I've never even had death grip issues. But today I noticed as well that no sound came from the earpiece. Speaker works fine, and the phone does not recognize that headphones are in. I've inserted/removed headphones, I've done several reboots, and I've connected to iTunes.

I'm going to be less than thrilled if I need to replace the phone. I was just about to do some hardware modding, and I know Apple just put those new Torx screws on that no one has keys for.

I'll try compressed air when I get home from work.

Well, I just went and got a new phone. After I had this problem, it pulled that 'No SIM' crap on my. NO MORE!

The good news is that the phone they gave me is running 4.1... !!!!

I was very fortunate that the air fixed my phone. As for the person with the 3G I would try replacing those parts, I was prepared to and it wasn't going to be that expensive.
