After interviewing several 2.1 FW users, it seems Apple's latest apps released from the app store since 2.2 do not offer backwards compatibility. Newer apps like monopoly will get a "not compatible with this iphone" message until you update to 2.2 FW.

While this has just surfaced and very few games fall into this category, will Apple go back through all the IPA's and make them this way? What is in the new FW that Apple is so interested in making us use, unlike the previous FW's?

Speculation around the phone calling home and other "kill all" commands such as the previous kill switch fiasco continue to gain ground as one thing is for certain......... Apple has a motive for getting users on the new FW. What that motive is has yet to be determined.

yup. all of you have participated in the monopoly thread and that was a prime example of this. i used the term of "herding" thier customers.....kinda like sheep. i like the new firmware but i dont think its appropriate for apple to pretty much force thier customers into a new firmware. i have a feeling its targeted around the 3g users since the baseband update to 2.2 disables most unlocks

Does anyone know the name of the app in Cydia that spoofs your firmware? I cannot find it and would like to see if I can fake a 2.2 firmware to see if it will bypass this crap.

Well...I'm...Just...gonna...go...make my own apple store...and never update again!...Ever!

Since we're in the market for coining phrases:

The Applesphere - The cyber-based-region, over which apple reigns supreme!

The Herding Effect - Apples all powerful method of bating firmware updates with shiny new non-backwards-compatable apps (This ones all yours cricketlang)

iSheeple - Unjailbroken, poor, defensless, and deprived iPhone users.
    Viruses
    Intruders
    Spyware
    Trojans and
    Adware

It's mainly up to the developers.

Every update apple modify / add new frameworks. If developers use these frameworks then they have to tell Apple that it only works on xxx firmware.

Everyone I have spoken to has tried to keep developing their apps where possible on the older SDK frameworks so that they have a wider market of people to sell to.

You can't really blame Apple here. They are trying to make things better and it's up to the developers if they choose to use these features.

There are pros and cons to developing both jailbroken apps and apps for the App Store, which is why I have a few of each.

You could move it up manually. I've forgotten what .plist you had to change, but I'm positive it can be done.

You can manually enter the firmware version you want in those empty boxes

This only works if you download from itunes onto your phone or SSH them on or use Diskaid.

Um... because it's better and more stable? What a paranoid society we live in when people question a companies motives for improving their products. Good lord.

Yes Apple is getting very pushy indeed.
I think apples head is getting too big for its shoulders and might explode one day and become just another Mcdonalds apple pie.
Here in Australia they prefer you to make an apointment to buy an accessory or ask a question......hm makes you wonder.

Is that like when Microsoft technical support charges your $22 before you can even ask your question?
