    There has to be a better solution than mywi for tethering. The jailbreak was sweet and worked flawless for me, tethering would complete this awesome setup.

    Mywi is a great app for tethering, creating a mobile hotspot, and the new ondemand feature is very convienant.

    Official tethering is $20 a month but if you jailbreak your phone and install an app like MyWi you can tether for free but it does suck a lot of data so if you have a limit on data, keep track of how much you have used.

    Today AT&T sent me an email and text about me tethering I'm on an unlimited data plan they said they detect that I'm tethering my iPhone 4 to my computer how is this possible. Has anyone else had this problem with AT&T and if so is there a solution thanks. Here's the email..

    Many AT&T customers use their smartphones as a broadband connection for other devices, like laptops, netbooks or other smartphones– a practice commonly known as tethering. Tethering can be an efficient way for our customers to enjoy the benefits of AT&T's mobile broadband network and use more than one device to stay in touch with important people and information. To take advantage of this feature, we require that in addition to a data plan, you also have a tethering plan.

    Our records show that you use this capability, but are not subscribed to our tethering plan.

    If you would like to continue tethering, please log into
    your account online at Cell Phones and Cell Phone Plans - Wireless from AT&T, or call us
    at 1-888-860-6789 Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. CST
    or Saturday, 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. CST, by March 27, 2011
    to sign up for DataPro 4GB for Smartphone Tethering.
    Here are details on the plan:

    DataPro 4GB for Smartphone Tethering
    • $45 per month
    (this gives you 4GB in total, combining both your smartphone data plan for $25 and the tethering feature, $20)

    I suspect that they don't know you are tethering (how the heck would they know that?), but perhaps you are using more data than they think a cell phone can use.

    Well they can definitely detect if you are tethering, it's not a question of whether they can or not but rather whether the would which maybe galaxygrrl is right by saying maybe it's high data users (let's hope anyway). Right when infrastructure mode comes out too. That really sucks

    They target high data usage and assume you are tethering. It's not definitive but in the threads that cover this issue, it seems the people using large amounts of data are getting these notifications. I have had 2 AT&T reps tell me they don't know how people use data and in no way can they know what the data is used for or how it is being used when I inquired about why some days my data would spike higher than normal. So either they're lying and telling me they can't tell me what I have done to incur the usage so they can keep sucking money out of me, or they really can't tell.

    MyWi has worked great for me on my Viphone thus far! I just took it and my laptop to Cali and back with 0 problems. We had my laptop, my iPod Touch, and my girlfriend's iPhone 3Gs connected in the car all at once most of the way there.

    Has anyone on Verizon gotten this message yet? I'm curious to know just how much data is "too much" and triggers this email from AT&T.
