The price of a US ipad2 16 Gig wifi only in the S is $500 which is 350.

IN Europe it is 499 so is there any reason apart from warranty and value added tax not to take advantage of the discrepancy?

How often is the one year warranty actually needed. I would guess that apple being allpe their failure rate is tiny.

True and Ipad has International Warranty, you can exchange it ( not return ) anywhere where there is apple store if there is a problem while under warranty

so there is nothing to loose by taking advantage of the lower price in the US?

    Is that correct?

I wouldn't call it '..evading Customs tax..". Most countries allow some tax-free imports for personal use. They do in the US. With Apples international warranty, it looks like a win-win

You have to consider travelling from Europe to US expenses, but if you are around here in the states for Business, then why not. Bear in mind , if you chose the GSM or CDMA model, it is locked to US carrier.

iPad is not locked at all, that is one of the selling points. You would just have to check that your carrier's 3G band is supported on the iPad..

I have bought an iPad from the US and use it in the UK, all works ok just the charger is a US which is easily changeable. Just have to remember that the cost is the US needs to have tax added to the price.

Importing to the UK the device is taxable on import, if you do not pay the tax it is smuggling. If you do, the cost is almost exactly the same.
If you do avoid the tax, the only problem is the plug, the 3G iPads sold in the USA (make sure it's GSMnot CDMA) wilk work in Europe. AFAIK the only ones which are sold locked are ones sold here in the UK by Orange.
