    The plan is to buy a used iPhone 5 with a bad ESN (probably the Sprint version).

    Is there any hope of using it with my current provider (t-mobile)?

    Be careful. If you purchase one, you can UNLOCK it only if you have the old customers information. Otherwise Sprint will give you a hard time. The other way around it will be to flash it to a different carrier or find a friend that works at sprint at a high level.

    also be careful because the carriers (sprint, etc) are quick to claim they cant help you. its stolen. what they can do is help you report it, and get your money back.
