We all knew Q4 of 2014 would be a huge holiday quarter for Apple -- it's biggest ever. But new estimates from the UBS Evidence Lab iPhone Monitor is shedding light on just how big that big quarter likely was.

Before Apple confirms iPhone sales numbers later this month on the company's next earnings call, chatter is buzzing that Apple's iPhone sales were significantly stronger than even the most optimistic sales projections observed in late December.

UBS Evidence Lab Phone Monitor now puts holiday quarter iPhone sales at 70.9 million units.

"The evidence lab uses numbers based upon search requests for the device," Patently Apple reports Wednesday. "To have hit the estimate, Apple would have had to sell the units before Saturday December 27. That was the last day of Apple's Holiday December quarter or 1st quarter."

As MMi confirmed Monday, Apple will report its 1Q 2015 earnings (a period that encompasses the final three months of 2014) on January 27th. MMi will have full coverage of the earnings data at that time.
