Updated: Hackers Say They Did Nothing Illegal

Yesterday we posted an article about the exploit that had been used to access over 114,000 AT&T iPad users, revealing their contact lists and SIM identifiers. In the recent turn of events, Fox News and now WallStreet Journal, are reporting that the FBI is now stepping in to further investigate the security breach

It does seem to get rather interesting when you start to factor in a few things. Escher Auernheimer, a member of the hacking group, claims that, by simply submitting information into a public website, is not illegal and that they only accessed the information, and did nothing with it except demonstrate the exploit. This has been the case with many hackers lately, simply showing the fact that there is indeed a hole. Ike and others (the good ol Rick Roll) did the same, not exactly doing anything illegal as far as I understand.

Escher claims that their group only gave the information to Gawker and that the only information disclosed was bout the hole itself.

While the group has taken some criticism for not directly contacting AT&T about the situation, it claims that it "made sure that someone else tipped them off" and waited for AT&T to fix the issue before going public.
AT&T has apologized for the hole, and assures it plugged. I too should apologize for my poor choice in a title yesterday

This news comes from FOX, and now the WallStreet Journal.

"The FBI is aware of these possible computer intrusions and has opened an investigation," said Katherine Schweit, an FBI spokeswoman. Ms. Schweit said the FBI began the investigation Thursday but wouldn't comment on what the bureau is looking at. "It's very early in the investigation," she added."]"The FBI is aware of these possible computer intrusions and has opened an investigation," said Katherine Schweit, an FBI spokeswoman. The least ATT could do is notify the people that it happened to.

I sure would be pretty cautious with AT&T, Probably suggest they update their security so these scripts that they have installed can't be decoded from just emails of different accounts.

I'm interested to see what laws this would actually violate... If their purpose was merely to expose the fact that there was a vulnerability I don't see anything wrong, but if they maliciously used the information that was available then appropriate consequences should result

Nice cheap shot at Fox News. That really adds to your credibility. Actually, it probably does in some circles. Sad.

Although I do find it rather amusing that many of these users had to click on a fraudulent bill link in order to get hacked.
I feel like maybe you don't actaully understand what happened. This was not done via phishing. Nobody had to click anything. I think you might have misread the article. It was suggesting that phishing scams using these email addresses could be the *potential hazard* of an exploit like this. It was a total hypothetical and not something that has happened to any of the people who's email's were taken.

That said, most of the articles themselves don't seem to understand wtf happened. At any rate, IANAL but I doubt the FBI will seek to prosecute anyone. AT&T's system wasn't breached here, it just spat out private data when poked in the the right way, and so they poked it repeatedly. I really don't think this can be considered illegal.

It's nothing more than left wing, liberal arrogance and jealousy from incompetent new organizations who have become nothing more than propagandists and news readers instead of journalists.
