Apple would be the third-largest portable computer maker in the world if an iPad is put in the same category as netbooks and laptops. That's what Deutschebank's Chris Whitmore found when he ran the numbers for the past quarter, according to a story on Fortune magazine's website. The iPad - which, let's remember, has only been available since April - propelled Apple past industry giants like Toshiba and Lenovo. Only HP and Acer sold more.

In the note to his clients, Whitmore looked at the IDC global portable computing market share survey for the quarter that ended in June. According to that report, Apple was #7, with 2.47 million MacBooks and MacBook Pros sold. He added the 3.27 million iPads that have been sold since launch, and Apple's share went to #3. ”When including the iPad as part of the NB [notebook] market, Apple leapt over Asus, Lenovo, Toshiba and Dell in terms of global unit share,” he wrote. What's more, the sales did not come at the expense of the MacBook; in other words the feared "cannibalization" of Apple's product line did not occur. "Apple’s traditional MacBook business posted accelerated unit growth on a [year-to-year] basis in [the second quarter of the year] despite the launch of the iPad,“ Whitmore wrote. The cannibal went after other manufacturers' notebooks instead: Whitmore found that "the iPad is directly cannibalizing demand for other vendors’ [notebook] products."

Classifying the iPad as a computer could make sense. It - potentially - does everything a computer can do. The one thing it can't do, of course, is let you run the apps of your choice on it, not without a jailbreak. So let's add that to the pile of reasons why Apple should open up iOS: they could probably own the netbook market within a year.

At the risk of stirring up a useless debate, I'm gonna say...

    Laptop > Netbook > iPad

That's really good. Consider how popular and cheaper PC are, Apple have done very well.

Uhh, why not? They are as much of a "computer" and as much portable (if not more than) as an ipad. If anything, the ipad should not at all be included in the laptop/netbook category.

Technically not as the iPad is an iPod touch with more ram, faster CPU think it's clocked at 800mhz and a bigger screen, nothing more nothing less.

Notebooks and laptops are not touch (screen) based also laptops and netbooks have true operating systems not a mobile os oh and they also support all media content plus are upgradable and fully open not proprietary (<-- means closed off cant do **** with it (jailbreak doesn't count as this doesn't come as standard)) based like iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

Also you can't run your own apps on it what if I need Photoshop doesn't work on iPad, but works on laptops and notebooks. (also flash and adobe products)

Also as stated in post 1 the iPad does everything the others do, so does the iPod and iPhone, do they count, they run all the same apps as the iPad, so if this is based of of what it can run and do then the other two devices should be counted.

So all along I thought the iPad was a oversized iPod touch with some ios features from the iPhone like 3G. meh. I wish it were a computer where it had a cd drive, USB port and a OS that you could load software on (not just apps). So in my own definition and opinion and the iPad is not really a tablet computer. It's a freaking large iPod touch on steroids. So for other manufactures to want to kill the iPad. Just produce a similar size device with a desktop/laptop based OS that can also run apps and play blue ray cd's... Whala your iPad killer... Ohhh and great battery and no blue screen of deaths pls...(this means u MS) :-).

Just imagine what the iPad sales would be if... Ran ios, macosx/win in parallel, USB, mini HDMI and blueray player! Now that would be a bas ***** tablet computer. And make sales go thru the roof IMO.

Lastly... Love the fact my i4 is JB!!!!!! Sweeeeeet!

Another "news" fail. It's really getting pathetic now these days.

Since when does % growth equate to total sales, or as the title states, "#3 Portable Computer Maker"?

If I start making laptops next week and I make a total of 1, then next year I make a total of 20, that is a 2,000% increase in sales. That hardly makes little ol' me the '#1 Portable Computer Maker'.

iPad and android tablets can't replace a laptop or netbook since they have slightly mod mobile OS. So true.

The fail is simply in the graph used. If you read the article they show a different graph which illustrates that in pure volume terms, including iPad shipments, that Apple is the third largest laptop manufacturer in the world.
