On the eve of Apple's anticipated iPad 5 launch, Localytics is out with a new report that pinpoints the most popular iDevices released to date by their lingering respective market shares.

The data presented indicates that while the iPad mini has become a hot commodity around the world, the pint-sized tablet only accounts for a 17 percent market share of all of iOS tablets.

Also of note is the fact that the iPad Mini and the current-gen iPad 4 combine to represent just 35 percent of all of active iOS tablets. Although increased competition from Android in the tablet market could be a factor, the folks at Localytics present another palpable theory.

"This could be an indication that the innovation in tablets is slowing down and the perceived differentiation of the latest-generation tablets is getting smaller with each new release," the report reads. "That being said, a retina display could certainly be the trigger Apple is looking for to drive a major upgrade cycle."

As of the most recent market data available, Apple's iPad 2 remains the most prevent iOS-powered tablet in use around the world, representing 38% of total global iOS tablet share today.

iPad 2 is a great entry level device. It has great specs still considering how old it is. I do think they should either update the iPad 2 to give it the same features that all of the new devices have or get rid of it altogether though.

If you want more specs though that's what the iPad 4th gen is for

I still have mine as I didn't see the point in updating. Only new features are Retina and Thunderbolt port. Once the finger reader and or 64bit tech comes..i'll be first in line.

Lightning port you mean. Also, the newer iPads have airdrop support and the processor is so much faster! But my point is that they need to update the entry level device. Maybe give the iPad 2 and A6 keep it non retina display and make it a lightning device.

For some reason I am starting to hate my iPhone and iPad I am sick of them. I don't want any other type of device. I'm just sick of them. Cellphones and tablets in general.

I know that feel. You're beginning to realize that being constantly hooked on microtechnology might not be such a healthy thing after all. I recommend not using them for a while. Do a few things that don't require any LCD screens and you'll feel so much better. Then come back and you'll probably have a better time.

That, or iOS 7 is gradually beginning to annoy you with the slow zooming animations. It's happening to me. It's aggravating on an iPad.

Exactly why I haven't updated to iOS 7 on my iPad... I can't even do it when the jailbreak comes out... I'm going to have to wait until the developer of ClockWind updates that tweak for iOS 7 and THEN I'll update to iOS 7... Almost regret getting the iPhone 5s... Miss my jailbreak soooooo much!
