According to a recent survey by Piper Jaffray, 75% of the people who purchased an iPad Air on launch day already owned an iPad, compared to only 58% for last year’s iPad mini launch. The Piper Jaffray analyst, Gene Munster, believes the US market may be getting slightly more saturated. The test surveyed 71 day-one iPad buyers, finding that the early-adopter upgrade cycle is around 23 months, significantly shorter than the general public’s upgrade cycle of 30 months. The average capacity of the models purchased today was found to be 59.7 GB compared to 40.5 GB for the 3rd-gen iPad launch.

Munster mentioned the following regarding the matter:

Of the iPad Air buyers who already own an iPad (75%), only 18% expected to keep using the old device and essentially all of those users were owners of an iPad Mini. We noted a similar trend in our iPad Mini survey in that 76% of iPad Mini buyers expected to use the Mini along with their prior full-sized iPad. We believe this makes sense as the majority of consumers that already own an iPad seemed to be replacing it with the Air entirely, but viewed the Mini as a companion device to the larger iPad. In other words, if a consumer owns more than one iPad, it is more likely to be an iPad Air and an iPad Mini than multiple full-sized iPads.
With Apple likely to sell millions of iPads this weekend, Piper Jaffray’s survey of 71 buyers is just a very small fraction but the broader trends could be consistent with a larger US market. One in five of the launch day buyers picked up the 128 GB iPad Air, while 94% of buyers said they owned an iPhone. The iPad Air continues to remain in stock on the Apple Store online with roughly all of the configurations available to ship within 24 hours.

Did any of you get an iPad Air? If so, was it your first iPad or did you already own an older iPad before your recent purchase?

Do you really think just 71 people from one time of day from one location is a reliable statistical sample??

This is exactly why the ipad air does not have the finger print option. Apple knows that it's loyal fans will buy another one next year. Just like, why in the world didn't the first ipad mini have a retina display. When I watched the presentation for the new ipads and they show the audience go crazy when he announced the ipad mini with retina display. I truly felt like I was watching one of those stupid infomercials where we are not suppose to believe that the audience are not bad actors trying to get their big break. They already had it on devices for a few years at that point. It's pure greed. But with a 75 percent number to go buy, who can blame them. I'm sure the next 2 or 3 ipads are already done. Apple owns the tablet market for now. This is why they will continue to role out updates like this.

This is definitely a crappy move on Apple's part. TouchID should've been placed on any device made after the ip5S. I didn't care about a Retina Mini because that just uses more battery. The next iPad I get will ONLY be an older Mini, a Mini w/ TouchID or 'maybe' an Air w/ TouchID (if our kids break our iPad 4!). Everything else is just a waste of money, IMO...
