Walgreens, the largest pharmacy chain in the US recently sent out an internal corporate memo asking employees to prepare for the launch of the iPhone 6 based Apple Pay service next Saturday, October 18th. The letter reportedly sent to Walgreens store managers (and published by the folks over at MacRumors) refers to the launch on this specific day but doesn’t indicate whether Apple plans to launch its payment services in the US on that day or if Walgreens is planning a coordinated rollout for that Saturday.

It should be noted that Apple is set to hold a keynote presentation two days prior to the 18th where it’s expected to unveil its next-gen iPads and potentially other new hardware. It’s also expected that the company will shed more light on the release of iOS 8.1 as well. The upcoming iOS 8.1 update is expected to enable Apple Pay functionality for both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

According to the Walgreens memo, Apple Pay is “easy, secure and ensures their privacy.” It also states that customers will “only need to tap their iPhone 6 to the upper portion of the pinpad to pay for their purchase.”

For those of you who didn’t know, Walgreens is a significant partner for Apple, as it’s the largest drug retailing chain in the US. The company operates more than 8,000 stores in all 50 states and will be supporting Apple Pay easily as the system relies on established near-field communications technology that is already widely adopted for other mobile payment services. Apple Pay however brings the iPhone 6 Touch ID fingerprint scanner into the fold, improving security for authorizing transactions.

Apple previously stated that Apple Pay would launch sometime in October although it has yet to be released. The mobile payment solution wasn’t given a specific launch date but it’s likely to happen sometime in the next week. We’ll have to wait and see.

Do we have to leave our devices after we tape them or are we allowed to have them back?
