I agree that that is a bit extreme but there are truths to it. Imagine in the near future, knowing your location is of the norm, and knowing what you look like is the next big thing. When you take a picture on your iPhone, Apple will be able to share your photos with advertisers. If your hair is getting too long, here's the nearest barber. Your teeth are a bit crooked and yellow, here's the nearest dentist. Ugly much? Here's the nearest plastic surgeon.

@ tudtran they do it so they can sell you stuff. Your location is actually a very valuable for advertisers, and you may already know that Apple is getting into the advertising business with iAds.
I think the best example of this is the movie Minority Report. Imagine getting convicted of a crime you have not even committed yet and there is no 100% guarantee you will do it. This is getting closer and closer with cameras on streets. They are taking computers and gathering behaviors of everyone and to the extreme taking pictures for facial recognition to determine how likely you will commit a crime and dispatch police if you are acting suspicious all based on what the computer thinks.

Also in the movie while walking though the mall it takes you picture then give you personal ads based on you. This was recently tried in I believe the UK. While driving down the road a camera would take a picture of your tag and then up the road it would provide a advertisement based on information they found on that tag.

Apple can't really do anything to fix the network.....since, you know, that's AT&T's problem.... and if you needed to know where you were, Cell Phone companies already can track your location...those cute little "Family Monitoring" upgrades (of course costing about $10/month) for your account.

I'm not paranoid, but I also don't give a damn about location based ads. Advertisers in general need a huge jump since their losing tons of money to the internet, so location-based and mobile is the next thing to focus on.

It's when iAds starts flashing an Ad on my phone that I can't exit out of because Apple has a patent on that to..and that Ad is telling me I prefer to purchase this type of cereal based on the information they collected from using my phone as a credit card...you can see where this would go

Actually that would be cool if Apple kept track of my groceries for me

I wonder when apple collects this data if it consumes data usage on your plan? If it does, how much data is used each time they collect?

That's definitely something I wonder. If I'm paying for 2GB, I don't want any extra stuff beyond what I'm already looking at. I totally agree.

I wouldn't p*ss off the veterans of MMi... Especially*since you're new to forum and only 3 post's in....respect your elders my man...Plus, the colored text options are availiable for a reason, so you can use them... And he was correct, it's "we're" which I'm not sure if you know this but it means "we are" not were...even on internet forums proper English is called for if you expect people to give a d*nm about what you have to say or think... Just saying... Welcome to MMi!

^^***Especially*since you're new to forum and only 3 post's in... correction, I meant posts not post's since the added " 's " displays possession and not the plural version of the word... Also, the " * " was a typo and since I'm on my Jesus Phone 4, you can't edit your posts as you would be able to on a computer... Have a great day MMi.

I know he was correct, I am quite the grammar Nazi myself, even when I'm texting I use proper grammar.

It's just that one of my pet peeves of the Internet is people that post in random, unnecessary colours. It's like having a conversation with someone that keeps shouting at you even though they are standing right next to you, as though they just really want attention.

And I know that I only have 3 (4 now) posts, but I do forget sometimes, you see, I am a member of TouchArcade and I have >2000 posts there and it just feels like it's all the same website.

I also often have trouble conveving sarcastic tones over the Internet because, well.... It's the Internet.

iAds may sound good to devs, but as a purely consumer level user, I'm very unexcited. iAds are likely to be an annoyance at the least and a PITA at the worst, resulting in less satisfied users of the devices.

The location information gathering is a bit unsettling. I don't think anyone needs to gather info about my whereabouts. I'm a pretty unlikely suspect for any crimes, and certainly not the type easily influenced by ads. Why should I give up any more privacy for someone else to make a buck or worse, pass on my location to the authorities on suspicion of some future crime that is considered a right up to now (sedition, offensive language, leaving my porch light on all night, excessive toilet flushing...)?
    ...a knock at the door...
Sir, please come with me to the station.
Your credit card purchases, internet forum posts, and movement about the city leads us to believe you are making unlicensed modifications to your _____ (home, car, iPhone, chain saw, kids...).
I would like to see Congress (or better yet consumers) put pressure on Steve to allow iOS users to opt out of iAds or at least make accidental touches on the ad less likely (press and hold to follow?). I don't care to have any unsolicited ads, so if iAds are too invasive or obnoxious, I may opt out of apps that use them. If they are easy to ignore, that may be a different story.

For now I guess I will have to get by with iOS 4 Settings>General>Location Services set to OFF.
