What about this, the iPhone shows 5 bars when you only have 5% signal strength.
So Apple’s engineers calibrated their digital “5-bars” digital display to show all 5-bars at any signal strength from 100% all the way down to 5%. It’s only when the received signal strength begins to drop below 5% that conversations suffer, calls get dropped, and Apple starts to take bars away from their 5-bar display.

OK so I have been trying something out.

I have 5 bars and when I pick the phone up in the "death grip" it will eventually go down to one. I have noticed though, that when I make a call or receive a call the bars will stay at 5.

And no I didn't do the tape hack.

I initially had issues with my proximity sensor (it was so bad I wondered if they forgot to add one - lol)I was able to resolve it by resetting the network settings. Seemed I was having that problem as I'd set up the phone as a restore from my previous one and not as a new phone...give it a try, it might work for you too

wouldnt a plastic sim tray be the fix? just send a ton to the apple stores let people pick them up at will for free.

Guys something odd here, Im on pay as you go with an unlocked iphone 4 direct from apple, I have my microsim card from O2 and the death grip is a real issue, I got a 3 simcard and cut it down to microsim size put it in my iphone and i CAN NOT make the signal go down at all with the death grip

Could the issue then be down to the networks?
