How this concept grew into a widely discussed topic on the web is far beyond my capacity for understanding, but, alas, there are some iPhone fanatics who have misinterpreted recent coverage of a new potential energy-harnessing battery and, as a result, started speculating about the prospect of a "nuclear-powered iPhone" arriving one day in the future.

Sounds like a great idea. Someone flubs a jailbreak and suddenly their city gets nuked. Actually, the super battery in question isn't nuclear-powered at all, just as our friends at Dvice pointed out in their coverage of the scientific discovery. As it turns out, you can obtain a "super substance" when you crush the chemical xenon difluoride with the pressure of 1 million times our atmosphere. What results is a "little metallic-looking brick that amounts to the most powerful non-nuclear energy storage device ever created." In other words, its a potential battery that you would never have to charge.

Even though the scientists responsible for the discovery at Washington State's chemistry labs admit that we have a long way to go "before this tech has a commercial application," there are reports and hype suggesting that Apple may soon look into the potential of this technology to devise future iPhone batteries that will last an entire lifetime without a single recharge. That sounds cool... but it probably won't ever happen. And we're certainly just as unlikely to see a nuclear-powered iPhone battery. The shear insanity of the suggestion doesn't even warrant a discussion of the many ways in which such a concept isn't practical, safe, or possibly even feasible.

Nonetheless, a lot of iPhone enthusiasts are "charged-up" by the discovery of this "super battery," and, consequently, it's a safe bet that we'll be herring plenty more nonsense about it in the days and weeks ahead.

Is that picture not just a levitating superconducting magnet? Also I'm sure the xenon difluoride would need to be kept cryogenically cold. They have been trying to find things forever to make more efficiency in electricity. One idea was to use superconductors for power lines, but they have to be kept a cryogenic temperatures to work, therefore more energy being pumped in than saved versus how much metal power lines lose.

Wow. Charged up over something that will never happen. And if it does we won't be around to see it.

Odds of that happening are about as good as kicking a 65yd soccer goal with both feet tied, blindfolded, against a 50mph headwind with 15 goalies in front of the goal.

Imagine the implications of that kind of technology. We would no longer have an electric utility bill. Everything would be battery powered since it would never have to be replaced. Utility companies would see massive drops in their profits. They wouldn't want that and would most likely lobby against such a device. What would happen if somebody all of a sudden developed a chemical additive that made any car achieve 50,000 miles/gallon while keeping performance un-affected? They'd be assassinated in a day.

I will settle for a removeable battery. Y'all can have the nuclear stuff.

I think it's called Unobtainium as for a nuclear powered battery. I'm sure it could be made safe. It's just the security threat of over millions of phone devices having the ability to be turned into a nuclear threat. Ridiculous to even ponder the general public having that kind of access

How about a battery that runs on the heat of people's hands...That way, when you hold it, rather than losing service, it charges itself. There are already watches that run like that, and it's pretty impressive. What's even better is a phone that runs on hand warmth, solar power, and a battery, but then, with a longer lasting battery, Apple will start to lose money, so therefore, it will never happen.

Uh no. It is pure speculation. Our phones screens have evolved faster than battery capabilities. Unfortunately. I am sure that Evo owners have the same problem only that they can swap batteries.
