I'm not sure I agree with this. Don't get me wrong as I've always been a big supporter of Cydia and also Rock to a lesser degree. Both have always stood against the corporate monster, albeit in a David and Goliath way. The independent ethos of these two very different communities has now disappeared, it's all a bit sad really.

I, for one, do not want to have anything to do with ROCK APPS. A year ago, I installed ROCK and had problems with it in reference to PKGBACKUP and some other apps. And ROCK stopped working on my Iphone 3G. I had to re-jailbreak my iphone to get it off of my phone.

Personally I like this move. I've always liked Cydia more. Only reason that I used Rock was because it loaded faster and it has a "Restore from Backup" feature. But on my iPhone 4 Cydia is blazing fast so I don't really see the difference; now Cydia is bring over the "Restore from Backup" feature too. So that pretty much eliminates Rock for me.

Plus I heard that a lot of people like Rock because of the Intelliborn products. Personally, there are better, and cheaper alternatives in Cydia to me. So I really don't care that much about that.

If Cydia incorporates Rock's backup system then I'll be a happy camper. That was the best part about Rock. Of course I also don't mind how Rock cached the repositories for a faster launch time. Cydia has improved, but it still takes a good 15 seconds to refresh all my sources. It used to take over a minute... back in the day. I've been here since September '07, when the 2G dropped to $299/$399).
They can have my jailbreak when they pry it from my cold dead fingers.

Well... I was more of a Rock user myself, but having a rudimentary understanding of APT, I see some of the design decision mess-ups that were done in Rock. I just wish searches were faster in Cydia, searching after you've filled everything in rather than as you type, though I'm not sure if search as you type is mandatory in apt.
It doesn't exactly search like that. When you type something in the search box, Cydia narrows the list down to only items that start with what you have typed in. Only once you hit the search button does it search for items that contain it anywhere in their title (and i think description).

On a side note, what is up with the lack of respect in these forums? I mean how on earth do i have more thanks than Saurik? Absolutely absurd to not thank him.

I don't use Rock, but this is kind of disappointing. Competition is a good thing, and saurik hasn't exactly been speedy with the updates lately as it is. We still don't even have a Cydia icon that's made for the retina display...
What Rock have you been hiding under? Cydia's icon is all gussied up for my retina display.

This is great news! I've always hated Rock.

While we're on it, some things I'd like to see improved in Cydia:

    • When a download fails because of a network error, I get multiple pop-ups. Couldn't these be merged like it does with the source refresh errors?
    • When I download an app or tweak that requires respring or reboot, but the download or installation fails, it still asks me to respring/reboot.
    • Better iPad support (I suppose this is already being worked on, or to be worked on soon).

Think this is a very bad move for developers .
Cydia Store still lacks a lot of features that are A MOST in virtual store.

    1. Bad support.
    2. Slow response times on developers questions.
    3. No way of managing your apps.
    4. Takes more then a week to add a new application.
    5. Bad payments/downloads statistics.
    6. Only 1-2 person handling more then 400 developers.
    7. Has no way of "pushing" certain/new apps for customers.
    8. No promotion codes.
    9. Slow as hell !!

(and i have more then 5 apps on sell on both Cydia & Rock. so i know what i'm talking about !).

This is a sad day for the jailbreak-developers community.

Sad news for a couple of reasons. I've grown to love Rock for its interface and speed but more importantly for some reason I have been unable to login to PayPal through Cydia for the past month. I type in my username and password then redirected to the login page on reload. Never have a problem with Rock.

I've sent emails for help in Cydia which go unanswered.

DAMNIT!! no more rock backups? screw you saurik! lol just kidding. But seriously Rock is way better on my ipad. Way freakin faster on my ipad and iphone with rotation on my ipad. There better be a freakin speed update in cydia. Well it least it goes to show Rock was very successful unlike Icy, Installer, and Kracken (something like that). I really liked it better than Cydia. I hope this means there will be more updates from saurik... like cydia and winterboard.

    This is terrible news.

I have a great deal of respect for Saurik - he's done an enormous amount for the jailbreak community and we wouldn't be where we are now without him, but Cydia has always been lacking in user interface despite having years to improve.

The most useful features missing from Cydia that few seem to be mentioning are ratings and reviews. Rock lets you sort all apps by user rating, and I've found a few gems this way which I would never have known about otherwise. It has also helped me avoid a shady app or two. I've never been able to understand why Cydia didn't have this feature, but it wasn't that big a deal in the past because you could just fire up Rock to look at reviews, and then install the app from Cydia for the stability.

Saurik gains a monopoly on the 30% cut of sales from all jailbreak apps, but users just lose the ability to use an app that filled in some of the shortcomings in Cydia's UI. The ONLY positive point in all of this is that we no longer are forced to use Rock's questionable installer for those previously Rock-exclusive apps.

    Very disappointing.
