For whatever reason the jailbreak works fine on my 4.2.1 iPad but Cydia shows up white and crashes... wth.
That's really strange it works fine with my ipad and ip4, Have you got the new beta? I'm guessing so lol I won't doubt the mods.

yes, i know. My question is how do you know if it's an "old 3GS" i know old bootrom probably, but how can you tell?
    Check Settings-General-About
Under CARRIER row, you'll see either MB or MC and then some numbers.
    If it's MB, he's safe
If it's MC, the fourth and fifth digits (numbers) represent the week when the phone was produced. It was either week 40 or 41 when Apple switched over to the 'new MC' model making it tethered. Hope that makes sense...

As others have awed does this require cydia patch or not????
The new beta does not require a patch, as cydia has been updated.

My ipad had the exact same results this morning. I rebooted and checked "just boot tethered right now" and it worked and has been working since.

If your Cydia icon is white, then you need to run redsnow again and tell it to boot you tethered only.

As for what works from Cydia? I can tell you grip does not!!! It Bricked my iPad. I had to reformat and StarT over.

OK... here's a question I don't recall having ever seen asked. Maybe because it's never been relavent until now.

Let's say I have a device I JB that's tethered for now. Is it the general concensus that when a future JB becomes available that does NOT require tethering, that I would simply be able to run that JB and not have to deal with re-installing everything and the device would simply become bootable w/o tethering or would I have to start all over again from scratch? Granted, I have Pkgbkup but I just want to know.

Anybody know for sure or want to rip through my logic and tell me why this wouldn't be the case?

FYI... this more personal intellectual curiosity. I generally wait a month or so for everything to stabilize before I jump in. I'm fine with what I have but I have an older 3Gs, a 2G, a 4 and an iPad. I'm more excited about getting everything on an even keel than the feature set proper. I have most of the same features now with JBs anyway.

So ur asking, hypothetically, if one were to JB 4.2.1 right now with an ip4 making it tethered; and then the untethered JB came out, hypothetically, next week. Would they lose all their JB apps/info from the tethered JB if they upgraded to the untethered JB?

If that's ur question, it depends on the 'type' of JB created for the untethered. Obviously, a custom FW tether would erase everything. A JB allowing us to keep all of our apps/info (like blackra1n, jailbreakme 2.0, limera1n, greenpois0n) would just give us the option to reinstall Cydia. Reinstalling Cydia will not remove ur current JB apps BUT those current JB apps will not appear under Packages anymore.

Hope I'm accurate regarding this and hope that helps!

If, for S&G (!), u open up limera1n and reinstall Cydia, you will see what I mean. BTW, greenpois0ns 'Loader' will not let u do this...

So i can finally update my 3G from 3.1.2 to 4.2? i have a handful of apps that no longer get transferred to the phone because they require 4.xx fw to work, i don't care about unlocking, but i do care about all the little tweaks i've done to the phone.
Id be very leery about jumping to the 4.2 from your 3.1.2...I did about 3 weeks ago using redsnOw (( 3.1.2 > 4.1 ))and its been REAL buggy ever since. Takes forever to load up text messages, contacts, etc. I'm wondering if the 4.2 will be the same.....so just be leery you may want to stay at 3.1.2 !
