If anyone notices this I had a very simple question to ask just out of curiosity. First of all I'm using an iPhone 4 with Firmware 4.1 jailbroken with redsn0w 0.9.4 (I believe) I also have SHSH blobs saved from 4.1, 4.2b3, 4.2.1 etc.. If I were to update and jailbreak (tethered) to 4.2.1 using the latest redsn0w, would I be able to later when it's released, jailbreak 4.2.1 untethered? or would it be more complicated then that in the long run? Basically what would make it worth jailbreaking tethered to 4.2.1 for me?
Yes, it is perfectly okay to update and run the tethered jailbreak for now. The worst case scenario would be that you'd simply have to restore to a stock 4.1 or 4.2.1 and then rejailbreak it when the untethered option is released.

As far as what's worth it to jailbreak tethered, that's really up for you to decide. It isn't a huge deal, being tethered that is, especially if you're like me and tend to have your nearby the majority of the time. I have my iPad on the tethered jb and have mobile substrate based apps on it (that is what requires you to re jb after each boot) and so far I have not had to rejailbreak it at all other than when i've installed new cydia packages that require a reboot to finish installing. The only thing stopping me from doing it to my iPhone 4 is that i'm still on bb 1.59.0 and want to keep it unlockable simply for future resale value. As soon as there's a way to update to 4.2.1 while preserving the baseband I will update in a heartbeat, even if it's tethered.

    LOL

It must be hereditary in my family because it's taking my nephew forever to get his too. Kids these days are asking for iPod touches for Christmas. Boy things are expensive. I remember when a big wheel was $25 and Transformers was $5 to $10.

No disrespect, but there's only a few of u that were crazy enough to install a tethered jailbreak, especially when you were warned that this would happen. I hope you get an answer though.

On a positive note, how was the performance? Is it worth upgrading to at all?
Not all of us wanted to upgrade to 4.2.1 I for one had to restore so I thought what the he'll I got my shsh stored but still can't downgrade even after changing host etc think before you post
On second note new text tones AirPrint not worth upgrading to be honest

I updated my iPhone 4 to 4.2.1 before I knew there was not an untethered JB out there, so I hope this is released soon!

I'm surprised old bootrom 3GS iPhones have become so rare that people have begun to doubt their existence.

I'm typing this sentence on an old bootrom 3GS, Maybe it's the last one!?!?

I did think before I posted. I was referring to people who intentionally upgraded to JB with the tethered JB. I meant no disrespect. I feel your pain since you had to restore

A tweet from @MuscleNerd last night revealed a workaround he's done for an untethered jailbreak of iOS 4.2.1 on the fourth-gen iPod touch. Using saved SHSH blobs from 4.2 beta 3, the method doesn't use expose any of the known holes that are used in the current set of exploits: it's a "backup plan" to the userland method that @comex is working on.

@MuscleNerd's method can be generalized for use with all devices (including the Apple TV 2G) and is reusable for future jailbreaks. @comex's method is, he says, "more extensible" though.

No updates yet as to when this will be released, but we'll let you know as soon as we find out.
    Awesome!

yeah for sure. im not downgrading on the iOS nor the BB on the 3GS anyway cuz it works like a charm. so the way to go is forward anyway

and i think my 3G will run 4.1 for the next time beeing. if i could i would downgrade back to 3.1.3 but no shsh :/ people say its way faster on 3.1.3
    propaganda....

Well here's a little story of little importance, but what the hell!

When I first had bought my 3G[S] last year during about September, I remember I was so pissed off because upon reading if it was an old bootrom or newer one. (I didn't even know 3G[S]'s had this 'new'/'old' bootrom fiasco going on, nor what a 'tethered jb' meant.)

Well, my 3G [S] all pointed to the fact that it was the new bootrom. (At that time, I thought if it was simply in the MCxxxx format meant it was a new bootrom) there wasn't much talk at the time of new bootroms, old ones, blah blah, and from reading posts with the same model, it all pointed to the fact that it was indeed the new one, I thought I was screwed.

To cut things short, I ended up taking the plunge, jailbroke it, found out it was the old bootrom, and this is what has made me love my 3G [S] even more. Never even knew it was so rare, but i'm very sure there are tons 'among' us.

I have my blobs saved from 3.1.2 onwards, but my BB still has been preserved to 5.11.07. The hardest part was probably figuring out how to update to 4.2.1 while preserving it, but all is good.
    iPhone 32GB 3GS - iOS 4.2.1 - BB: 5.11.07
    iPhone 16GB 3G - 3.1.3 - BB: 4.28.08
