The New York Times said today that they have information that points to Apple not releasing an iPhone nano. In the report they reference "people who have been briefed on Apple's plans," just the next generation iPhone, expected to launch this summer.

The Times points to the fact that this 'nano' phone would not necessarily be any cheaper to produce or sell, and that a smaller screen size would make porting apps difficult. The same report also mentions something we've heard a bunch of times before, that MobileMe will be overhauled, possibly be free, and may introduce cloud syncing.

If you're unfamiliar with the many rumors regarding the presumed iPhone nano (which the Times says will never come to fruition), check out the article from a few days ago that rounds up a majority of the rumors. I've got to to side with the NY Times on this. I really don't think that Apple would be planning a phone with a different screen size, particularly for a development reason. One of Apple's biggest strengths is knowing that any app in the app store will look correct on your current device. Even when the iPhone 4 changed resolution, it was doubled exactly, allowing developers an easy time in updating their applications. Another screen size just wouldn't make sense.

I'd rather see an iPhone Jumbo than an iPhone Nano. And no, I'm not talking about an iPad.

So should I wait to see if MobileMe will be free instead of renewing next month? That would be great if it was free. I was thinking about using googles services to keep my cash out of apples pocket.

Am I the only one who always thought that the rumored 1/3 size iPhone may have been, not referring to it's physical size, but it's storage? We all know that the memory is the biggest contributing factor to ALL iDevices' price. So by offering a phone with, let's say, 1-1.5 GB of onboard storage (enough for the iOS, contacts, cached email, SMS, and a few cached photos), apple could offer a version of the iPhone 5 at about $99.

This new bare-bones-capacity iPhone tier would then take full advantage of the rumored cloud-based mobile me update.

It is totally possible that this rumor of an iPhone that is 1/3 the size of current models, BUT the rumor mill took it as a PHYSICAL size instead of the more logical storage size.

JUST SAY'N. (if it winds up happening this summer, you heard it here first)

And no, I am not suggesting that this is going to replace the current storage tiers that are available, this will just be another, much cheaper, option.

why release a smaller screen when you are getting smashed with bigger and better screens like Galaxy S phones, etc.

Of course it would be cheaper without the bulk of the flash memory and having a smaller battery. The screen resolution could easily be the same as iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS if the pixel density were slightly increased making app compatibility a non-issue. It wouldn't need to be nearly as dense as the Retina Display in part because the screen will fill more of the space on the front. If this phone truly is 1/3rd the size, we're talking volume... not screen size. Most of the volume savings would come from the thickness (thinner) and lopping-off of the Home button and empty space around the top speaker.
