Who cares if these new features are apparently "copying" other manufacturers? They're still good, useful features. Think of the first production car with xenon HID headlights in the mid 1990's. Many other car makes followed suit because it's a superior type of automotive lighting. Does that mean the other car manufacturers "copied" the first?

This sounds like a great update to me. Hope it works okay with my 3GS, or maybe I'll just wait until we upgrade to the next iPhone (4S or 5 or whatever it may be).

And count me as another who could care less about the Twitter crap.

    A bit disappointed.

None of the features really seem all that great.

I'll still do cabled syncing for my Music (I'm not paying 25 bucks a year for music I already own)

The notification system doesn't really appeal to me. Am I the only one who doesn't like mobile notifier?

Looks like a next gen biteSMS will still be needed for my quick reply & compose.

Overall, I'll upgrade my 3Gs to this before selling, however without a new hardware announcement this entire event felt deflated...

Disappointing that many of these changes are copies from their competitors (Microsoft/Google/RIM) and third party developers. I was surprised they admitted some of their current offerings have "problems."
and whats really gonna be dissapointing is that the next new iphone which will probably come in the fall with ios 5 is gonna look exactly the same as the iphone 4 except with betta specs thats whats most disspointing

How would we jailbreak then? If all our updates will be from the idevice? Then what would happen if we had it jailbroken, then updated wirelessly? would the update effect the jailbroken state? If so, what would happen?

LOL, good one. This is a crazy-great update. Sure, it's adding stuff that others already have, but that doesn't make it any less useful.

Until, that is, we get to the iCloud service. I hate Apple to its core, but this is one giant frikkin' Ace up their sleeve.

Jailbreakers should be very, very worried.
Why as a Jailbreaker should I be worried?

I'm waiting to heard from Saurik, comex, chpwn, ect... I wanna know what OTA updates mean for jailbreaking. Jailbreakers have more or less all of these features and since iCloud supports 4.3 I see no need for iOS5 if it means no jailbreak.

Since iOS 5 isn't coming out until this fall, I'm assuming the next iPhone won't be released until this fall? I was hoping they'd announce for a sooner date. I guess Sept/Fall it is..

Why as a Jailbreaker should I be worried?
Because OTA updates have the potential to break the hole used in a jailbreak. Essentially there's 2 parts to a jailbreak. The hardware side and the software side. Now once the hardware side is open Apple can't fix this without releasing a new phone/ipod. Software is where they can patch holes. Remember when the comex brought jailbreakme.com back to life last August? Apple quickly released 4.0.1 to close this hole. Now what if Apple forces you to update your phone? Bye bye jailbreak every new update.

If anyone has an open spot for me on their dev account. It would be greatly appreciated. Sorry I'm not paying though.

I care because there is no outside the box (innovative) forward thinking by Apple. They seem to be side stepping to keep up with what Microsoft/Google and in one case RIM already have. There were more than a few groans during the keynote from developers in the audience.

OMG!!!!! This has gotta be the best iOS that Apple has ever released
There is a reason for that...... Apple is trying to kill the jailbreak scene. They are scouring the Jailbreak scene to see what is hot and why people jailbreak. They made a list and copied everything worth having. Effectively trying to (and successfully perhaps) kill the need to jailbreak at ALL.

I highly doubt there would be any "forced" anything regarding OTA updates. There would likely be a notification that you could decline, just like you can decline an update when you plug your phone into iTunes at present time. And I'm sure there will be terms and conditions you have to accept saying you know it will use cell data if you're not on wi-fi when you download the updates, etc.

If there's any "forcing" that happens I can already see a slew of lawsuits happening. Consumers have the right to stay on an older iOS whether it's currently supported or not.

well since iOS is still the smoothest and most intuitive smartphone OS, I really could care less about "forward thinking", as long as it works. As long as it works, most any new feature is welcome by me, aside from things like the Twitter junk as I said earlier. I don't "tweet" and could care less about Twitter personally. I'd rather see Facebook integration myself, something that works better than the blasted FB app.

apple is starting to become a joke... android, windows 7 and RIM already have these similar features, and apple introduces them today like its cutting edge.. stop it i say! apple better get ahead of the game before it loses a lot of customers..
I agree, I recently started using an HTC Inspire and as much as I'd like to remain in love with my 3GS, it just feels ancient, slow, and tiny now (even though it is jailbroken and does everything I want). I'm happy that iOS is being revamped, but other than the whole icloud thing and rich text, there isn't much that I see with iOS5 that android isn't already doing (that benefits or excites me). Now the multiple device sync and messaging integration will be awsome, bc I've got an ipad, iphone, and ipod (so they achieved a major milestone there), but man I hope the next iphone kicks azz!!

They could have at least teased us with details of the next iphone to keep people from going over to the android darkside....looks like its time for me to get a 4G data plan... HA

P.S....bc of the money I've spent on idevices and apps I now see how apple slowly leads us like lamps to slaughter. After spending so much money you've be a fool to completely jump ship.......

I completely agree. I'm just saying no one is certain on the future of jailbreaking at the moment. Right now biteSMS' quickreply feature is all iOS5 is missing to really make me happy. Yeah I love themes, iconoclasm, ect but that's the one feature I want on a stock OS. I've had my iPhone 4 since the day before release like some others on these boards. I went without a jailbreak until jailbreakme came along and that was the one feature I decided I missed the most.

Quick Reply and custom SMS tones and I'd be happy on a stock OS until the jailbreak was released.

    no update for maps again!
There is an update for maps, but that wasn't covered by the keynote speech.

There are also location-based reminders, which I know will hurt some devs here.
