iPhone owners may leave their nearest Starbucks with more than just a caffeine buzz next time. It appears that the venerable coffee maker and legendary tech giant are building upon their established relationship to offer some pretty neat free digital giveaways to Starbucks customers.

Similar to how Starbucks had enabled its customers to download free music tracks from iTunes, the coffee juggernaut is working with Apple to roll out a new app giveaway program. According to CNET, using the same "Pick of the Week" cards the two companies have been using for close to three years, Starbucks is "now using that same system to dole out iPhone applications."
Just like for music, users can find free cards waiting for them at the cash register with codes on the back that can be entered into iTunes or the App Store to get the application.
At present, the first premium iOS app to be given away at no charge is Shazam Encore, the very popular music-identifying app that normally sells for $5.99. Unfortunately, since neither Starbucks or Apple will dish further on the scope of the program, so it isn't yet clear if music track giveaways will be canned to make room for the new iOS app promotion.

A tall cup of coffee is $1.61 at Starbucks. Not sure where you are getting $5.99 from?

I'm just going to go to Starbucks once a week, pull one of the code slips, then go back home without paying for any coffee. I've heard that it is just in a small stack on the register table, and that you don't need to make a purchase.

Starbucks should be smart and keep the codes behind the register. If you ask for it, you get it. Simple as that.

First, I don't even think that their most expensive cup is $5.99. Second, the cost for the cup is the same, regardless. So, yes, if they are adding an app in there at normal price, it is certainly free. If it helps, think of it as buying the app and receiving a free cup of coffee. Better?

    IT WAS A JOKE
Even f it was a joke, it was a stupid one. Even if the cup was $5.99 if they are giving you the free app worth $6, you still come out on top...

I once prayed to God for an iPhone, but quickly found out He didn't work that way...so I stole an iPhone and prayed for His forgiveness.

Of course it's stupid....that's the point of a JOKE. It's not meant to be taken seriously. It was meant to poke fun of how high-price most of the stuff at Starbucks is and how "free" doesn't always truly mean "free".

But maybe it is truly free. I don't care. That $5 mocha frapp hits the spot regardless....so I'm going to Starbucks either way.

    Chill out people.
