Less than one month since iOS 5 was released to the masses, today Apple issued its first incremental update for the new iOS.

On Thursday, Apple released iOS 5.0.1 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. What we know for certain is that this hotly anticipated update takes aim at a lingering bug that first became apparent as the iPhone 4S reached consumers last month.

All told, the fixes in iOS 5.0.1 include:

    • Fixes bugs affecting battery life
    • Adds multitasking gestures for original iPad
    • Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
    • Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation

As you may recall, Apple has previously provided its developer community with two beta versions of iOS 5.0.1. The real deal is available now to all iDevice users via iTunes or as an an over-the-air update.

Any news on if this new update ruins the upcoming untethered jailbreak efforts?

    EXACTLY!!

    Don't forget:
According to his tweet, iOS 5.0.1 will close an iOS security bug found by Charlie Miller that makes exploits dramatically easier to tackle. This would imply that a jailbreak for iOS 5.0 versus iOS 5.0.1 could come quicker. Pod2g clarified in a later tweet that it wasn't a matter of iOS 5.0.1 never being jailbreakable, it will just be more difficult and will take longer.

So for us end users, what should we do? Below is the grant scheme of things:

iOS 5.0 Users: Remain on this firmware and do not update to iOS 5.0.1. After iOS 5.0.1 releases, Apple will close the signing window for this firmware and won't allow downgrades. With SHSH not being an option anymore, you may have to wait longer for a jailbreak if you're on iOS 5.0.1.

They say not to upgrade if you want an untethered jailbreak. Cuz it makes you even further away from one. I'm gonna sit tight with 5.0

We will see how my battery is after the update.... I shut off everything I could think of on my phone so my battery wouldn't die so fast. I might actually be able to use other things on my phone once I update it!

Looks like my iPad2 is gonna be stuck on 4.3.3 for a while longer.

Is this release the same build as the beta from last Friday?

Surely if Apple doesn't know how this jailbreak is being executed there a possibility the jailbreak may still be workable im thinking, obviously have to wait and see!

As they didn't fix the redsn0w exploit in the 5.0Betas I'm willing to bet you can still tether 5.0.1. Tethered jailbrakes are no skin off my teeth. Once I get confirmation that Redsn0w works ima upgrading.

Same as. I was gonna update to 5.0 yesterday but didn't think the update would be out so soon. Ah well 4.3.3 is fine for the time being.

Loving the OTA updates ... Was one thing that was sorely lacking about iOS but is now fixed. So much better and faster than plugging in and having to DL a huge update package.

As mentioned above. Now there are two concerns to deal with.1-The ability to be be able to restore to stock 5.0 from now on in case something goes wrong with the phone2-untethered JB

ok so i was going to update my iphone from 4.3.3 to 5.0 today because of these warnings of 5.0.1. Buti'm guessing i'm out of luck and wont be able to upgrade to 5.0 and would be forced to go to 5.0.1 now. is that correct.?
and i guess i could always just semi tether...
Damn i just missed the window
