In the fight for the title of best U.S. cellular carrier, AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon are constantly being put up against each other. An analytics firm by the name of Metrico Wireless Inc. compared the carriers to determine which one of the 3 major carriers had the fastest network and which one had the most reliable network.

What the firm did to perform the test was grab more than 21,000 web pages, 8,000 speed tests, and made over 6,000 voice calls from Apple’s iPhone 4S. The company used a proprietary measurement platform that they used to monitor and measure the performance of the carrier against each other. The sample size the company used was good therefore, the results are likely to be accurate.

According to the results, the fastest network in the comparison was AT&T. The wireless carrier had maximum download speeds of 6,047 Kbps and an average speed of 4,210 Kbps. For the same test, Verizon fell behind pretty quickly with a maximum download speed of 2,371 Kbps and an average of 1,071 Kbps. Sprint in this case was even slower than Verizon with a maximum speed of 1,767 Kbps and a mean speed of only 581 Kbps. In this case, the average download speed for AT&T was almost triple that of Verizons’ and roughly six time that of Sprint. Quite a big gap if you ask me.

Now when it comes to call reliability, Verizon had the fewest failed calls with only 2.1% To my surprise, AT&T was not too far behind with 2.8%. Sprint fell in last place once again with 3.7% of their calls dropping. The numbers are relatively low in total and another thing to take into consideration would probably be the location the phones were tested. I for one experienced a large number of dropped calls in New York City over the past few years, although I have to admit that it has gotten better recently.

Metrico also discovered that the iPhone 4S has an average dropped call rate of about 1.4%, which is poor when compared to other competing smartphones. However, when it comes to data task reliability, the iPhone 4S was almost at 100%, making it among the best in the world.

For those of you who have had experience or have heard from friends, how would you rank the three carriers? How did your experiences compare to the results Metrico found? Share your experiences and thoughts below!

I am shocked that Sprint has dropped calls. For the year I had them (EVO) I never dropped a single call.

Sprint just can't catch a break. Weak speeds and a higher drop rate then AT&T.

20mb per second!!!??? Can you say WIFI. I do believe the current cellular "up-to" download speed is around 7.2mb/s.

Not on 4G. They can get really high. Well above the measly 7.2 on 3G

I doubt our free public wifi is 20mbit at work. I think the connection is DSL, but I didn't even think about wifi being enabled on phone so I will have to check it out again I know the app shows a tower when it's using cellular. My first thought was the test was bogus or ran by verizon or something along the lines of power boost like time warner does with short bursts of 30mbit speeds. I knew I would be proved wrong and I was hoping so hah. Check this out though. It's not too far off at least from the 20mbit mark on the screen. They are very close, if it's true I will screen cap it and post it.

There isn't. The first true 4G will roll out next year when Verizon releases LTE Advanced.

I didn't expected At&t be almost 3x faster than Verizon. How the hell can Verizon be that slow?

The thing that you can do with an Android phone is run the Speedtest on wifi and, when the results come up, bring down the notification bar and turn off the wifi. Now you have a results page that shows you as connected on 3G/4G, and you can fool just about anyone (proof in this thread :P )

yeah ummmmmmmm not surprising at all that at&t is the fastest and verizon has the least dropped calls..... I am still with at&t.... but i want to go to tmobile..... my question is would tmobile be faster than at&t??? I don't care that much about dropped calls.... just call them back....

Also I tested my 4S with wifi on our work network and only pulled 2mb/s and it's DSL so no way to fool anyone the phone is a girls phone so she doesnt even know how to do anything like that and I ran the test myself.

I refuse to believe that AT&T can top my awesome 27kbps download speed! It only takes me several minutes to check each page on mmi.
