The iPhone lens adapter and lens case craze keeps getting crazier. Take this three lens carousel case for example.

The case and the accompanying lenses cost $250, or roughly half the price of a entry level DSLR with a kit lens. The case—carved from aircraft-grade aluminum (isn’t everything these days)—houses two tripod mounts and a carousel that contains a 0.7x wide-angle lens, a 0.33x fisheye lens and a 1.5x telephoto lens. Somehow, all of this metal and glass goodness only weighs 10 ounces.

As a film and media production guy the iPhone lens mounts and lens cases make little sense to me. They appear to be novelty items with no “real” purpose. The whole point of having a phone and camera on it is the idea portability and the ease of convergence. The two items together allow users to take photos on the go and now with the advancements in sensor technology phones can rival point-and-shoot camera quality. However, even point-and-shoots don’t utilize interchangeable lenses. But, because my experience with film and video the point of these devices could be lost on me.

By purchasing interchangeable lens cases the iPhone sacrifices its biggest advantage as a point and shoot, its portability. Also, I’m surprised there is enough of a market out there to justify the number of lens cases available. Who honestly is investing in a $250 case to take slightly better pictures. If someone desires manual control over their video and photos, might I suggest looking into a DSLR or micro 4/3rds camera? Panasonic, Nikon, and Sony have some interesting interchangeable 4/3rds options available for relatively cheap.

I understand the novelty of having interchangeable lenses on an iPhone, I just can’t justify their existence after analyzing the cost and benefits. Still, this case provides a simple and effective solution for those hankering for some iPhone lens love.

Ive been thinking about shoring a Hirt film using my iPhone. Would be a neat experience but doubt it's worth $250. Better off renting a 7D

If it wasn't so bulky, it might be worth it. I realize it has to be, but then again if I have to carry the extra bulk I amy as well get a dedicated camera that will blow this think clear out of the water.

Yep. It's half the price, AND less then half the quality of an entry level SLR

IMHO these things are an utter waste of time.

It's more of a novelty, like the article says. It's the same concept of getting a gold plated, jewel in crested case: 'Cause someone out there has too much money on their hands.

At least with case mods you can stick the thing in your pocket. WTF are you going to do with this thing? Gold plated case is you showing off you're a rich douche. Walking around with this thing is showing off that you are... just a douche.
