China Unicom will finally be authorized to carry Apple's new iPhone 4S in the coming days, according to published reports Wednesday. The device has been given the blessing by Chinese officials after passing stringent "wireless regulatory tests."

Prominent Asian-based publication MIC Gadget says China Unicom "is prepared to introduce the iPhone 4S and is only waiting for its network access certificate from authorities." More specifically, China Unicom’s sales executive Yu Yingtao said: “We will start sales once we get the certificate from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). It’s not up to us. We’ve already done all of our preparations, we’re just waiting on the permit.”

So close to the launch is China Unicom that reservations are now being taken for the iPhone 4S through China Unicom’s customer “clubhouse.”

Although it isn't clear how long this process could ultimately take, many believe the iPhone 4S will come to China Unicom before the middle of next month. When the green light finally comes, it will bring with it a different green light of sorts to Apple - a money light. The tech giant has its heart set on exploiting the lucrative Asian smartphone market by rapidly deploying the iPhone 4S in as many markets and with as many carrier partners as possible.

I don't understand whats so new about this. China Unicom was always the official carrier to carry the iPhone. And now its getting the latest gen. It will be HUGE for apple once China MOBILE gets their hands on the iPhone 4S as it is having over 600 million subscribers waiting to try the iPhone.

People are already buying them in Hong Kong or other means. With China Unicom, you still have to pay for the phone upfront and then some (around $750 for the 16gb). Granted, they do give some of that back to you monthly in the form of minutes but you still have to pay additional for the monthly service!
