The iPhone 4S is about to conquer China.

As MMi reported Wednesday, Apple plans to unleash its new smartphone in China (the world's largest mobile community) next Friday, January 13th. And given the operator's sweet promotion, there's an excellent possibility that the market share Apple wants to capture in China will soon become a reality.

According to a report this morning from Bloomberg, Chinese customers willing to pay a $45 monthly fee under a two-year contract will get the iPhone 4S at no charge. Obviously, China Unicom is eating a huge subsidy cost in order to release the phone at no charge to subscribers, but the carrier obviously believes this arrangement will prove highly lucrative over time.

China Unicom, the only one of the nation’s three carriers offering the iPhone with a service contract, is using the handset to woo high-end subscribers who play games and watch online videos using their phones.
“Customer response to our products in China has been off the charts,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in Wednesday morning's formal announcement to the press. “With the launch in China next week, iPhone 4S will be available in over 90 countries making this our fastest iPhone rollout ever.”

How exactly is China Unicom taking a huge subsidy cost. The customers who want it for free will be paying an additional $45 a month to get it for free. After 5 months, they've made over $200 which is the subsidy cost for the 16gb model. Continue that for two years and they will be making a **** ton of money in addition to the monthly service cost.

Never mind...whoever wrote the text on this website has no idea how to read. It is as low as $45 a month for service to get a free phone, not in addition to the service. L2read/regurgitate info.

If you're referring to US Dollars then I had my 4S in the UK for free on a 35/month contract with a copious tariff which with current conversion rates is only 5~ more than the mentioned deal.

What why?! Just because phones are crazy stupid ridiculous expensive in America, doesn't mean that they're as expensive everywhere else. Pretty much every phone is available for free with unlimited minutes, 1GB+ data and several hundred minutes for around 30 ($46) a month for 2 years, though most of the time it's cheaper to buy the phone outright and get a 10 giffgaff simcard :P

Its a matter of time that either UniCom will pull that back - because they will lose their shirts off on subsidy as everyone will activate fraud lines and resell those phones in other countries. (this similarly happend in the US a while back)
there was a backend manufacturing agreement, where the end result is win-win, as they will not lose and apple wont care because its just increased market-share at the end regardless.
