Another week, another app sneaks into Apple’s walled garden with a hidden tethering function.

QuasiDisk is just the latest in a long history of applications sneaking into The App Store with either hidden or blatant tethering functions. Unlike the last tethering app “Tether” (the second t was backwards presumably throwing Apple’s app police off) QuasiDisk masquerades as a file management app, and a very poor one at that. The tethering function isn’t an easy toggle away either, which is another reason this app most likely go through the app screeners, you can’t enable tethering unless you know what you’re doing.

The tether is via proxy meaning users will need to follow the video above pretty closely to get the tethering function to work. It involves creating an adhoc network through your network settings and altering the HTTP and Socks proxy to port 6666 (HTTP) and port 5050 (Socks). Users will need to set the QuasiDisk FTP Server Port to 5100 as well.

So, unless I’m wrong the steps look like this:

    1. Create Adhoc network on Mac.
    2. Connect iPhone to AdHoc network
    3. Change Quasidisk FTP Server Port to 5100
    4. Change HTTP proxy port to 6666
    5. Change Socks proxy port to 5050
    6. Check to see if iPhone and Mac IP Addresses Match. If they do...

    Internet achieved.

Two big things to note, this is not a Wi-Fi tether, you're iPhone must be plugged into your computer. Also, you must keep the QuasiDisk wifi screen open, if you close the screen you lose connection. If you run the app in the background you lose connection. Props to zerocool for pointing this out.

Obviously owners of TetherMe or MyWi don’t have to trouble themselves with this workaround, but for the non jailbroke or very cheap folk, downloading QuasiDisk for $1.99 and spending five minutes setting up this proxy server my be worth their time.

As always get it while you can, Apple's app assassins will locate QuasiDisk soon enough.

    A couple things to note.

    1. Once you type 5100 use the keyboard DONE button and not the one in the corner as that corner button closes the wifi section and you don't want to do this see #2
    2. If you close the wifi screen you lose connection. If you background that app you lose connection. Keep the wifi screen open and it will stay connected.

Do Apple still have a killswitch for banned apps? If so isn't this a waste of time for non-jailbroken users? Apple will just remove the app from thier devices when they remove it from the App Store.

Please correct me if I'm wrong......

I've used payupsucka... It's hidden feature allows tethering if the right IoU is written in.

Apple does have a kill switch; however, they have not yet used it for this.

And now that we've posted about this publicly, on the Internet, Apple will remove the app from the App Store soon.
