Imagine if in 2008’s Hurt Locker the elite soldier tasked with disarming IEDs and other explosives whipped out his iPhone and proclaimed “Wait, wait. I have an App for that.”

Well the US Department of Defense Explosive Ordnance Disposal is imaging exactly that and is looking for coders to help build an entire app store dedicated to bomb technicians. Funding for those chosen to develop the store can reach from 750,000 to $1.25 million according to an engineer close to the program.

Programmers hoping to get a part of the government-funded pie need to make sure their product is password protected and encrypted. The apps in question will likely be a digitization of the current handbooks and procedural manuals, which could come in handy during the heat of battle. Or our bomb technicians could potentially get distracted harvesting their crops and snapping Instagram photos. The deadline is March 9,2012 and the App Store should be compatible with one or more of the “major operating systems” commercially available including “Android, Apple, Blackberry etc.”

On a side note, Blackberry should be flattered someone considers them a “major operating system.”

should have an AR app that can scan IED's in question and then give help on what type of bomb, and how to disable e.t.c.

Why would there be an "etc." in a list of the "major operating systems"?

+1 I don't see why they're paying 1.25 million for some digital manuals.
