AT&T is listening to customers and providing them with a service they should have from the start?

I know I can’t believe it either, but AT&T will now unlock your iPhone, the only catch? Your 2-year contract needs to be expired. The unlock will allow users to use their iPhone on any other carrier’s network that is compatible with the device.

Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee. — AT&T
The new policy seems to be in response to an iPhone owner who contacted Tim Cook after AT&T refused to unlock his off-contract iPhone 3GS. The 3GS owner was moving to Canada and wanted to continue to use his phone after the move. AT&T eventually unlocked the device after being contacted directly by Cook’s office (that had to be an awkward conversation).

While there are any number of hacks and unlock workarounds, this new policy offers the more patient among us to finally escape AT&T’s suffocating lack of service, customer care, and commitment to slow network expansion.

Finally! AT&T should have been doing this from the start! This will be much better than waiting for an unlock to happen

Funny I read this after I just got a text from At&T stating "Your data usage has reached 3GB this month. Using more than 3GB in future billing cycles will result in reduced speeds. You can use wi-fi to help avoid reduced speeds."

I didn't get throttled. Today was the last day in my billing cycle.

It sounds like this is only good for people who still have an account with AT&T. I bought my phone second-hand, so even though the contract is up, I'm worried I won't be able to take advantage of this.

Now, here's the question. I'm currently on a 2 year contract with an iPhone 4S. Obviously I can't have that phone unlocked, but does this mean they will unlock a 4 or 3GS that I still have sitting around. Is there a limit to the number of off contract iPhones I have that can be unlocked?

So, if I have a 4s (current) and an old 4 not in use anymore they won't unlock the 4 till my contract is up for the 4s?

I hope we can do this online so we don't have to contact the crappy AT&T customer service.

Ya right, and AT&T missing out on getting you in their brick and mortar stores so they can push their outrageously priced accessories on you? Highly doubt it.

Also, will it be free or will they charge you to do it??!!
