Hard to tell if he was trolling or not.

Seriously though I think we should count more based on look and technical standards of the phone. There has only been three different form factors of the iPhone. Original -> 3G/3GS brought 3G. 3G/3GS -> 4/4S brought retina, HSPA+, and CDMA. The next iPhone which inevitably will be called the new iPhone (Apple's naming scheme used for their other like Macbook Pro and iPad) will likely bring us a new form factor with 4G capabilities.

Despite the next generation iPhone technically being the 6th; in reality its only the 3rd time the phone will be something fundamentally different from its predecessor. And "fundamentally different" by Apple standards isn't much. The device sells like hotcakes so why change it too much?

Except the 4 and 4s are totally different. The retina display is really the only thing the same in the phone. They upgraded the processor, camera, made it a world phone, added Siri, added dual switching antennas, and upgraded the sizes of the phone to 64GB. Yes the design may be the same but the phone is totally different than the 4 on the inside.

The processor and camera is upgraded in each iteration of the iPhone. Its a crippled world phone. Yes, it does have CMDA and GSM capabilities, but you cannot use the CDMA chip unless you have a CDMA carrier like Verizon or Sprint. Siri is beta software that can be used on any iPhone not just the 4S. So yes the 4S is different on the inside, but not fundamentally(totally) different overall. Screen size, resolution, communication capabilities, form factor, battery life are all essentially the same.
