Apple secured an injunction against the sale of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus last week, and it looks like Google is finally ready to provide a fix so the court will allow the sale of the device.

The patent Apple successfully leveraged to earn the injunction covers the quick search function on the Android OS that retrieves information from both the web and the devices phone. Google’s fix will limit the quick search function to returning only online results, preventing Nexus owners from searching the contents of their own phone.

Google will push an over-the-air update to Ice Cream Sandwich sometime in the near future, effectively crippling the phone’s quick search function. Apple has successfully forced Google to make its product worse just so it can be sold in the U.S. If the court ultimately upholds the preliminary injunction, expect Apple to sue other handset makers for similar patent violations.

The overwhelming irony that Apple successfully blocked the sales of a Google device by leveraging a “search” patent almost outweighs the absurdity of Apple’s claim in the first place. Almost.

Erm this is rather old & also incorrect news.

Google are planning to release Jellybean early to the Galaxy Nexus, therefore circumventing the ban. They are no longer working on an ICS update

Can't believe they approved a patent as trivial as searching within your own device.

Cuz it's a very vague and general patent. That should not have even been awarded to apple, they are not the first to do that. This is getting so stupid. Apple is only hurting the industry by doin this.

Smells like Apple Fanboy in this sentence. How is limiting the search results to only web make the Galaxy Nexus worse?

I don't see the suit winning. I don't even see how something like this can be patented (I type in the name of an app and it shows up in search results). Seriously? Just about every desktop OS does exactly that. The climate of patent laws, especially those pertaining to software, is in shambles. This needs fixing... FAST.

Apple's got the patent whether you like it or not, and no matter how much you keep saying they shouldn't have it won't change the fact that they do, even if it is wrong.

These lawsuits between apple and google and Samsung are getting kind of ridiculous. I'm a big fan of apple, I would never go to android or pc. But the honest truth is its upsetting to see that there is more news about a different lawsuit on a daily basis. I say pay a royalty and let bygones be bygones. I think Samsung and apple either sever their ties and move on. I wanna know more about the new iPhone not another damn lawsuit. And as for Samsung and google they should be focusing on trying to reduce the amount of malware a they have running throughout their devices. Just saying!

The problem is both Apple and the Patent system. You have already noticed, that patent should never have been awarded in the first place. After all, searching within an OS has always been an OS feature. There are simply too many ridiculous claims and approved patents out there
