After Apple pulled the picture-sharing app, 500px, iOS developers seem to be taking notice of the reason and taking cautionary measures to avoid making a similar mistake. App Store veteran, Tumblr, is now warning users of possible exposure to adult content with its latest update as a result.

Originally noted by The Verge, users downloading the recent release of Tumblr (version 3.2.4) were met with Apple’s “age-restricted material” pop-up box, forcing them to confirm that they were over the age of 17 before installing the application. While the update’s release notes only mention “small bug fixes,” the 17+ content warning was a definite change as seen in a cached version of the Tumblr version 3.2.3 iTunes Preview page.

It’s unclear whether Apple was asked to make the necessary change or if it did so proactively after noticing what happened with 500px and ISO500. Either way, Apple’s policy clearly prohibits the distribution of nude or pornographic material through the App Store, meaning any app that has access to the internet or certain adult themed blogs should carry the 17+ rating.

Adding to the issue of adult-material being available to everyone was the new Twitter-owned app, Vine, which allows users to record and post six-second clips to the internet. The app was featured as an “Editor’s Choice” until it was discovered that hardcore pornography could easily be found through the service’s hashtag search function. Vine is still available in the App Store without an adult content rating as of right now.

As it should be. As an avid blogger and frequent user of tumblr i have noticed that with a simple click of the "load more posts" button or refresh of the page it can go from puppies to porn in seconds. Literally. Its gotten to the point that i never log in during class or public places anymore for fear of not knowing what is going to show up. lol
