Apple recently released the MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7, an update which addresses very specific issues regarding early 2011 15- and 17-inch models as well as the mid 2010 15- and 17-inch models. Although it was rare, the issue would cause laptops to unexpectedly shut down or stop functioning after more than 1,000 battery charge cycles.

Those of you who want to download the firmware update can do so through Software Update on the select models or alternatively can go to Apple’s support website to download it.

For those of you who are unaware of the issue, Apple previously released the MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.6 which was said to address similar battery issues on other MacBook models. This battery issue seems to be becoming found on additional models, hence the update to prevent recurring issues.
