It's a painful headline for Apple but one that SAI asserts is accurate in its representation of Apple's smartphone marketshare today.

"Apple's smartphone market share is dead in the water, once again," says Jay Yarow of SAI. The report is based on the most recent data provided by Gartner.

Since 2011, Apple's market share has fluctuated between 13% and 22%, while Android has consistently climbed to secure 75% of the market. Ugly but true, the iPhone's unit growth is "collapsing" to single digits.

"It seems clear that if Apple wants to grab the next piece of the smartphone market it will have to think different than it has so far," Yarow writes in his report Tuesday.

Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner, doesn't sound much more optimistic when it comes to Apple.

In this morning's report, Gupta says that Apple "is faced with the challenge of being increasingly dependent on the replacement market as its addressable market is capped. The next two quarters will also be challenging, as there are no new products are expected to be coming before the third quarter of 2013."

I think it's too late...out of date iOS which is too restrictive, under specced hardware...the market has adjusted & is more innovative than what apple is offering...

Yeah.. I've been ALL Apple for years, and consider myself to be an Apple Evangelist haha, but I'm really disappointed. They need to completely change some things... the company really was thriving off of Steve.

Soooo...... The fact that google whores out its os to EVERY company making a phone is insubstantial? Or the fact that say for instance samesung makes a phone every other day (with android i feel compelled to add) is also irrelevant? Im sorry if i sounf like a fanboy but...... Well i dont feel i need to continue actually.

When you put out a million different phones per year by 15 different makers, you're going to have market share. Apple still makes a ton of money, they're fine.

You truly dont know what i mean?? I would spell it out but i already did. Ok ill try. U have a gallon of water and a gallon of milk. U put the water in ONE glass. That you made. Maybe you make three or four or five glasses but thats it. Now you put the milk in EVERY glass that you see/find. More milk in more glasses for more people. Get it? Only four or five glasses of water. Hundreds of glasses of milk. ( i hope you realize the milk in each glass is very little , like android imo while the glasses with water are COMPLETELY full). See?

Wow i just blew my own mind! 😋😋

I think Apple deserves this, maybe they will finally give many users what they want. Overhaul iOS and give me a bigger screen!

Apple needs to make a split and offer an open iOS along side it's regular iOS. They could even charge extra $ for an open license. Now that would be a game changer!

I absolutely hate Androids software. I don't care how great the phone is, the software is horrid to work with.

It's just like the example of:

Viper which makes 600 HP and will do the 1/4 in 11.8 sec
Eclipse which was beefed up to make 900 HP and does the 1/4 in 10.2 sec
Which one would you want in your garage?

Back in November, I made the switch to the shiny new Nokia Lumia 920. Its bigger screen and better specs along with Windows Phone 8 drew me away from the quaint and sometimes boring iPhone. Wireless charging, NFC, PureView...oh, they had me good. Soon I found that after the new car smell wore off, that the grass wasn't greener. Bluetooth issues, copy and paste sucks and don't dare let the battery die unless you want to not have a phone for 3 hours (and that's just to get it to boot!). Six months I lasted with it and now I'm back in the quaint confines of an iPhone 5. Sure it could be boring sometimes but that's because it just works. Searching forums all day trying to figure out how to get the Bluetooth to work or if anyone has an answer to the charging issues is not the excitement I want in a phone.
