AT&T Sunday evening ahead of Monday’s highly-anticipated WWDC 2013 event announced that the carrier has revised their Upgrade Policy.

Now instead of waiting 20 months after signing up for a two-year agreement, AT&T notes that customers will have to wait the full 24 months of the two-year agreement to be eligible for a phone upgrade:

Today, we’re announcing a 24-month upgrade policy across all of AT&T’s wireless products and services. This aligns device upgrade eligibility with our standard two-year wireless agreement and it applies to any customer whose agreement expires in March 2014 or later.
Notably, AT&T’s new upgrade policy will only apply to customers whose two-year agreement expires March 2014 or later. If your two-year agreement with AT&T expires before this date, you are not affected by the policy change. AT&T mentions that the change will align upgrades with AT&T's standard two-year agreements.

Verizon in April announced a similar policy change that forced customers under contract to wait 24 months rather than 20 months if the agreement expired on or after January 2014.

Everyone keep in mind that Verizon just made this same announcement 2-3 weeks ago.

So basically, they expect shortages of new phones in the near future and want to make sure new/returning customers get one while the existing customers simply stay put on their current phones.

No worries for me...AT&T lost my business (when my contract expires) after watching a buddy download 26megs a second on Verizon.

AT&T is basically expecting people to buy the iPhone even if they have to pay the full unlocked price. So basically AT&T is finding different ways on not having to pay for their end of the iPhone.

It's actually a bad business move on their part. Before, you were offered a discount on an upgraded phone before your contract expired in exchange for signing a new 2-year contract. I can't speak for others, but it's literally the only reason I've remained with AT&T this long.

I love sprint. Been with them for 3years just love paying for cheaper bills and unlimited data. I used 65GB last month and didn't pay an extra cent or shed dollars for every mb/ I go over.

+1 AT&T is a rip off. Sprint is #1 in my opinion. And plus i get lte in my area. Unthrottled lte data. Over 2gb's a month that att offers. No thx.
