Have you ever wanted to be able to watch a video, but continue to do other things on the side on the same device? iOS hacker and developer Ryan Petrich has a usable solution for us all.

Shown above, a new jailbreak tweak dubbed VideoPane allows you to watch a video continuously while doing other things on your iOS device at the same time. It doesn’t simply make the video audio play in the background, but rather it allows the video to play in a window on top of the application that you’re in so that you can use the application and watch the video at the same time.

When you tap on the video pane window, you will get access to several controls, such as a close button to close the video window, an expand button to make the video fill the whole screen, and a pause/play button to pause or play the video:

Detaching a video into a separate window is simple. Very simple. As soon as your device begins to play video media, you will automatically get a pop-up asking you if you want the video to play in a separate pane or not. You can detach it into a separate window, or leave it alone in its current application. You can only have one of these videos playing at once:

VideoPane adds a preferences pane to the Settings application where you can configure the tweak's options. You will be able to choose an Activator action for invoking a VideoPane, and choose to require landscape or not. Notably, if you choose to use an Activator action to invoke a video pane, you will need to invoke the Activator action for the pop-up to appear in a video. A pop-up will not appear automatically asking you if you want the video to play in separate window if you choose an Activator action:

VideoPane works with several video-playing applications including, but not limited to:

    • YouTube
    • iTunes
    • Netflix
    • Mobile Safari
    • Facebook
    • Twitter
    • Dropbox
    • Twitch
    • DisplayRecorder

We think VideoPane is definitely worth taking a look at. It's a little slower on older devices because of the use of system resources, but with a dual-core iPhone 4S or iPhone 5, the software will run much smoother and feel more native. You will find VideoPane in Cydia's BigBoss repository for $1.99.

Well, this is a feature available after quite some time in Android. I used this regularly when I had my Galaxy Note II. Also, it was good to split the screen in two (although the screen is bigger than iphone5) and being able to watch the net (like watching sports on streaming with firefox and... flash) and send sms/emails at the same time. I have to admit it's great.

I might actually get this. Any bugs? Would it be possible to code it for FT?

On another note, Is it just me or did the Keyboard input slow down after the last update?

Could this allow the video be forced to video-out? I like having a second screen and multitasking.
Also, does this work on iPad?

Even still, not a bad tweak from what I can tell.

Its great on my S4 also. Doing other things with a video playing in a window.
So many features on Android that the iPhone is missing but slowly jailbreakers are adding those very useful features.
Just if they were the same price as the Android versions would be better. (All those features on Android are stock and free)

Funny how when Android had it it was said to be a stupid gimmick that no one would use

Impressive work, as always, from Mr. Petrich :-) But the "resize" option only seems to give you the choice of full-screen or really, really small. Or am I holding it wrong?!?

You have to double tap and hold then move finger up or down to resize. Also note that when you initate the video pane your video will restart and you need to make the size big enough in order to see the slider controls to adjust the playback.
