At the beginning of August, Apple’s free Apple Store application for iOS began offering paid App Store content for free to users of the application following an update that was released in July. The application that was given away was Color Zen, usually a 99˘ value in the App Store.

The Apple Store application Monday started offering paid iBooks content for free to users of the application. Monday’s offering is a book entitled Away in My Airplane by Margaret Wise Brown, usually a $3.99 value in Apple's iBooks store...

Apple has started offering paid content in their free Apple Store application in the hopes to have users visit the application more often to make customers more aware of Apple’s full product offerings; a marketing plan with the intention of trying to sell more of Apple's ecosystem to existing customers.

As 9to5Mac reports, the free iBook offer will end on August 28th. After this point, we expect that Apple will begin offering new content, possibly from the iTunes Store.

No. It's a way of making people use their store app so you're tempted to buy something when you see it in the app.
