Apple’s Japanese partner carriers recently announced price plans for the latest iPhones with each provider offering the entry level version of the flagship iPhone 5S for free with a two-year contract, a move seemingly sparked by NTT DoCoMo’s agreement to sell the device. With the announcement that Japan’s largest cellular provider NTT DoCoMo would start sales of Apple’s iPhone for the first time; the country’s three major carriers now have access to the device.

In what looks to be a price war to attract new customers, all three telecoms; DoCoMo, SoftBank and KDDI, are offering the iPhone 5S with discounts that effectively make the phone free on contract. As noted by the folks over at CNET, the special pricing only applies to the 16 GB version of the handset. As with any subsidized device, limitations apply to early upgraders, though the up-front fee is still less than what customers in the US have to pay. Interestingly enough, only KDDI is offering a free version of the cheaper iPhone 5C with a new contract activation or transfer from another carrier.

In addition, DoCoMo is running a promotion to lure existing iPhone users away from rival networks. The promotion states if an iPhone owner brings their used SoftBank or KDDI handset, they will receive special bonus “points” that can be applied to a new DoCoMo account, redeemable for other products or repair services.

As of right now, it remains to be seen what effect the iPhone will ultimately have on Japan’s smartphone market, which was previously dominated by domestic products. Subscriber statistics appear to show Apple’s handset quickly gaining market share. Some industry watchers believe Apple stands to gain roughly 35 million additional iPhone sales in 2014 as a result of new deals with DoCoMo and China Mobile. The latter has yet to announce partnership with Apple, though both the iPhone 5C and 5S were granted a network license from the Chinese government earlier this week, allowing it to operate on the unique TD-LTE bands used by the world’s largest cellular provider.

That will never happen well here in the states especially with a new or fairly new apple device. A android device or a older apple device would get the free on contract call.

This will never happen here because AT&T and Verizon don't make enough money from us. We should all be happy with our small monthly bills.

I'm assuming you have never had a mobile phone contract on one of the carriers listed in china or Japan? The cost of mobile phone service is significantly cheaper on Verizon or AT&T is definitely a great deal cheaper. So, yes, smaller monthly bills. By a lot.

This is nothing new; my iPhone 4 and 5 were free with 2-yr contract while I was stationed out there. Same seems to be the case here in Germany, around the bases anyway. That's why so many of us have them, actually.

Between this and China/Hong Kong getting to preorder I'm starting to feel like we're getting a raw deal here in the US.

But I bet UK/AUS folks would beg to differ.

Makes sense now, we can't even preorder the iPhone 5S in the states, because Apple are giving them away in communist countries.

Well .. I know nothing about the prices for a contract in the states.
But i can hardly believe its cheap. Here in Denmark i almost think we have the best prices.

    Unlimited talking to all carrier
    Unlimited sms and mms
20 GB Internet including internet sharing
Only 6 month contract when you buy a phone
    12 month free spotify
    Almost full 4G network anywhere

    22 US $

But then the price for an iphone will be 335 $ .. but the thing we are doing in Denmark is that you can pay the
    phone over the phone bill over some month .. lets say 24 month .. 335 / 24 = 13,9 $ + the contract 22 $ ...

Yup! that's cheap, but you're making compromises. only 20gb internet and no LTE(?). Other than that, you're probably better off than the states.

We have LTE .. We just call it 4G
My bad .. After 20 GB they slow down the speed to 2 mbit only
I have around 45 mbit on my iPhone 5 now.

Looks like you have it pretty good over there.
We sure have .. But Denmark is not in line to have the 5S and 5C when release .. Maybe first december :-(

AT&T's 4G network is completely different than it's 4G LTE network aswell as many other carriers.
