On Wednesday, social networking giant Facebook released an update to its iOS application bringing the application up to version 6.8.

The update makes it so that videos in your News Feed will play automatically while you are scrolling through the content in your News Feed. It behaves much like videos in your Instagram News Feed. Even though the videos begin playing automatically, you won’t hear noise from the video until you tap on the video. This prevents unwanted noises from causing a scene when you want to remain quiet.

The update also adds in some bug fixes for the application, which improve not only the application's security and stability, but also improve the application's performance in some cases.

Existing users of Facebook for iOS will find the update under the Updates tab in the App Store application. Alternatively, you can download the latest version of Facebook for iOS for free from this App Store link.

I thought the same thing! I'll push play if I want them to play. Facebook is just going to turn into even more of a data hog.

What's weird is that I noticed some videos play automatically on my News Feed even before I got this update! I've noticed it for almost a week now but it hasn't been on every video.

You disable it so it only auto plays on wifi. Go to settings>Facebook> settings>auto play on wifi only>turn on.

my wife's iphone has been doing this for at least a month. i was confused as to why mine wasn't and discovered i had to turn an option for this on in the settings. so now, mine has been doing this for a few weeks. I'm going to assume with the new update, it just turns the setting on. as far as unwanted data usage, you should be able to turn it off.
