Apple hasn't been keeping up with their Keynote Remote application for iOS. It hasn't been updated with improvements in ages, and it never received a facelift for iOS 7 even though Apple updated just about all of the company's other applications that it offers in the App Store. Today's update to the Keynote application for iOS (version 2.1) seems to shed some light on why.

Following the update to Keynote for iOS, Apple has removed the Keynote Remote application from the iOS App Store, as 9to5Mac reports. Upon trying to find the application in the App Store, users will get the usual "Item Not Available" alert message:

Users that try to pair the existing Keynote Remote application on their devices to the latest version of Keynote for Mac will get a warning message telling them that the Keynote Remote application is discontinued and that it's recommended they use the latest version of Keynote for iOS, which apparently now has the remote control functionality built right in. The outdated Keynote Remote application will still work, but it won't be as pretty to use as the latest version of the Keynote application.

With the remote functionality now built right into the Keynote application, users will be able to remove the clutter of the extra application icon from their home screen. You can download the latest version of the Keynote application from the iOS App Store from this App Store link.

Apple also made some changes to iWork for iCloud on Thursday that gave the Web page a more iOS 7-style appearance.

    Great news!!

Instead of having the remote app (2.6 MB) I'm now supposed to install the full keynote app (466 MB) - nearly 0.5 GB of storage gone on my phone just to remote control iPad presentations...!?

    I don't think so!

To me, this just makes 3rd party alternatives (SlideShark or the like) a lot more attractiv.

So pay $9.99 for an app you just want to use as a remote now?
