Apple recently released an 8 GB version of its mid-tier iPhone 5C handset on the UK carrier, O2. The move has brought the plastic-backed smartphone into the sub-$100 price range in a possible bid to stave off flagging sales. The 8 GB iPhone 5C has made its way to the UK Apple Store with a price of £429.

As of right now, the 7 GB iPhone 5C is only showing up on wireless carrier O2’s UK webpage with prices ranging from free to £409.99 (roughly $680). The unsubsidized price represents a savings of £100 ($166) off the 16GB model. Although the phone doesn’t appear on the UK’s Online Apple Store or Apple’s iPhone 5C informational webpage, it appears the only change made was a decrease in onboard storage.

The iPhone 4S remains presents on O2’s website as of this writing. Industry watchers speculated the older generation device would be discontinued in favor of an 8 GB iPhone 5C.

With the cheaper iPhone 5C iteration, Apple may potentially be looking to kick start what many perceive to be stagnant sales. Cook acknowledged that demand for the iPhone 5C was weaker than expected when discussing quarterly numbers in January. The lower-priced handset represents a smaller mix of overall iPhone sales. In total, Apple has sold 51 million iPhones during the holiday quarter which remains a new record for the company but below market expectations of 55 million.

The recent debut comes less than one day after a supposedly leaked internal email from O2 Germany, which first spurred rumors that an 8 GB iPhone 5C would be released sometime this week. The lower capacity 5C has yet to make its way to the mobile operator’s German website.

How do you think the 8 GB iPhone 5C will fair in today’s market?

You switch from 8gb to 7gb. I'm assuming a typo? Proof reading might have helped

I still don't see it selling as they projected initially.

It's not just on O2, it's also available unlocked through the Apple Store but the price difference between the 16GB 5C and the 8GB 5C is of only £40...pathetic...

Still don't get the 8gb as people will get feed up having to delete and reinstall things all the time! Would have thought apple would have come up with their own memory card design and added expandable memory to devices!
