    On Monday, comScore dropped new mobile industry data which is particularly telling for Apple's iPhone.

    In the U.S., smartphone penetration is approaching the next major milestone threshold - 70% market penetration.

    Pointing to key trends in the U.S. smartphone industry for the three month period ending March 2014, a staggering 166 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones. That amounts to a 68.8 percent mobile market penetration.

    As of December 2013, market penetration was just north of 60%, not nearly close to the 70% marker.

    For the three-month period ending March 2014, Apple ranked as the top OEM with 41.4 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers. Samsung placed second with 27 percent market share (up 0.9 percentage points from December). In third place was LG with 6.7 percent (up 0.1 percentage points). Motorola finished fourth with 6.4 percent and HTC finished in fifth with 5.4 percent.

    In terms of smartphone platforms, however, Android is still tops in the U.S. Android ranked as the top smartphone platform in March with 52.2 percent market share (up 0.7 percentage points from December), followed by Apple with 41.4 percent.

    Apple has great market share considering they don't offer super cheap and crappy phones to the masses and they don't feel the need to offer crazy BOGO deals, including on their newly-released flagship phone (Samsung)
