When you've got a contact that you could benefit having easy access to calling, a new jailbreak tweak called CallLauncher by iOS developer va2ron1 could come in handy in a pinch.

The tweak will make it so that you can configure an application icon, or icon(s), so that when you tap on it, you will get the choice of launching the application, or calling a contact that you've assigned to it. When you have assigned a contact to an application icon, such as the Mail application as we have done in the example above, when you tap on that application icon from your Home Screen, a menu comes up with an icon representing the Mail application, and an icon representing a shortcut to the contact that you can call.

Setting up the tweak is reasonably straightforward. When you want to configure an application icon, you put your device into the 'jiggle' editing mode and you double-tap on an application icon to get the editing interface that you see below:

In the editing interface, you get a button that allows for you to add a contact, and a cancel button so you can exit the editing interface. When you tap on the "Add Contact" button, you will get a list of contacts from your Contacts application and you can pick one to be added to the interface. When you pick one, it is added to the interface if they have a contact picture, the picture will show up, but if there is no contact picture, then it will just show their first and last initials as it did in our example.

NOTE: One thing we have noticed is that you can only add a single contact at a time to each application icon. You also can't assign a different contact to a different application icon it has to be the same contact that you assigned to another application icon. We're unsure if this is a compatibility issue with iOS 7.1.1, or if the developer intended for this functionality, but we've reached out to the developer to ask about this issue. We do believe that the tweak would be better if it allowed for you to assign any contact that you wanted to any application icon on your Home Screen.

CallLauncher adds a preferences pane to your Settings application where you can configure a few options:

Here, you will be able to:

    • Enable QuickCall, which skips the interface asking if you want to open the application or call the contact, and calls the contact immediately
    • Hide the labels in the CallLauncher interface
    • Hide the contact pictures in the CallLauncher interface
    • Un-mask the application icon(s) in the CallLauncher interface
    • Un-mask the contact icon(s) in the CallLauncher interface
    • Enable a clear wallpaper in the CallLauncher interface instead of the black one

The developer is asking for a firm $1.99 for this jailbreak tweak in Cydia's BigBoss repository, which until the issue we mentioned before is improved, we believe is a pretty steep price. On the other hand, it has a very nice aesthetic to it, and we believe the tweak could be useful. If you'd like to give it a try, you can pick it up from Cydia right now it only supports iOS 7 and iPhone or iPod touch (not iPad) at this point in time.

You can watch the developer's demonstration video of CallLauncher below:
