After reports this morning of the iPhone 6 Plus apparently bending along the back of the uni-body from the force of tight pants pockets against the owners' thigh, so called 'bend tests' are now being performed to test the theory that the new 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus will bend with enough force.

Unbox Therapy is one of the first to bend an iPhone 6 Plus with his bare hands to show just how malleable the aluminum device is under force:

As it would appear, a relatively large amount of force is required to cause the bend on the device. When in your pocket, the weight of your body pressing the device between your thigh and the fibers of your pants is more than enough to cause the reported damage.

The part of the uni-body right where the volume buttons are on the device appears to be the device's sweet spot for bending. This could be because of the lack of structural support in this area due to the cut-outs for the buttons themselves.

It's worth noting that even after being bent, the device does still work perfectly as expected without damage to the display. Although the device will not sit flat on a table anymore after the bend, the display can still be used to operate the device without any cracks hindering view.

To prevent this from happening to you, using a rigid iPhone case of some kind, or using a holster or external carrying method is recommended.

Well I'll be damned! Who would of thunk a thin aluminum & glass wafer would bend under extreme pressure.
Great, so much for using the plus for a jack stand while changing my oil!

A friend of mine already had to return his for lines in the screen. it was fine until he had it in his pocket all day. i told him it may have come from the ribbon cable end unseating from its connection point from flexing in his pocket

This test is like the drop test. Why would someone pay £££ for an iphone just to destroy it. Damn it, send the unbroken ones to me!

I don't think so. Remember antennagate? It's not Tims fault. No one takes a phone out and bends it to say "yep, that's an issue".

You can decry the merits of this test all you want, but reports of pocket bending from people's _front_ pockets is a serious issue, especially after just a few days of availability. I think I might wait until the next generation now.

Are you kidding me? I don't care what company builds the phone, any phone this big and thin is going to be subject to bending easier than a thicker smaller screen phone. If you want a thin big screen phone then use a little common sense and take care of it properly. Apple builds some of the best quality phones and devices period. Not some plasticy garbage crap other manufacturers pump out.

He really applied a lot of force directly in one spot - I'm more surprised that it didn't just snap in half!

This confirms for me that it's more durable in this regard than I would have imagined.

Even so, I'm glad I got the rigid leather case

Pro tip: don't sit on your phone.

I know I know, you just have to have that humongous screen, and you have to claim it fits in your front pocket just fine. But if this kind of pressure is occurring in your front pocket, clearly it is by no means comfortable, so you must either be sitting in painful denial, or you're sitting on your phone. And I'm sorry to say, if you're sitting on your phone, you have nobody to blame for the damage but yourself!

I'm just bought a ticket for a raffle in which one of the prizes is a Galaxy S4. If I win it, I'm going to make a similar video to see how it does.

I'm guessing the outcome of this test wont be pretty. I can already hear the cracking noises in my head.

Wow, this is not good. I was just about to buy one. Now I'll be waiting to hear what apple does to fix this. They need to recall them for this IMO

Also, a bend test is just the cherry on top. The real problem is this is happening while sitting in people's pockets. You can compare it to Androids all you want but if the android doesn't bend in pocket the point is moot

I find it hard to believe that people would ignore that it bends when in your front pocket. That's a huge flaw. You can stay In denial all you want but it won't change the facts. What android phone bends to the point of damage while in your front pocket? I'm no android fan. I'm just being a realist
