For all iPhone 5s users, the Touch ID feature is nothing new to you for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices. Last year, a hacker by the name of Starbug released a video showcasing how he was able to bypass the Touch ID sensor with artificial copies of fingerprints. It seems likely that the security of the new iPhone 6 can be bypassed the same way, but security researcher Marc Rogers said that the new iPhone 6 is more secure. According to Rogers:

Slightly “dodgy” fake fingerprints that fooled the iPhone 5S did not fool the iPhone 6. To fool the iPhone 6 you need to make sure your fingerprint clone is clear, correctly proportioned, correctly positioned, and thick enough to prevent your real fingerprint coming through to confuse it.

The biggest change to the sensor is that it seems to be much more sensitive, which is made possible by a higher resolution scanning part [...] it’s likely this is also aided by the fact that the iPhone 6 appears to scan a much wider area of your fingerprint to improve reliability.
Rogers basically stated that the iPhone 6 privacy sensor was more reliable and will have to take more effort to be able to get around the system. He also said that it would take more determination, more equipment, and extended access to the phone in order to bypass the security. We assume then for the average hacker, it wouldn’t even be worth the time and most wouldn’t take this route to begin with. However, we wouldn’t put it past some fraudsters out there, as some may feel the need to crack this problem.

From what I remember last year watching the video, as many steps there was and supplies to use to make the fake print. It wasn't practical at all.

I noticed the improvement IMMEDIATELY! So far I'm extremely impressed by Touch ID on iPhone 6. Works flawlessly every time. It was a little sketchy at times on 5s.

My iPhone 6 will be here tomorrow so I can't speak for that, BUT on iOS 8 my iPhone 5S hasn't failed once, except for when my fingers are wet.

I haven't had too many problems to complain about Touch ID on my 5s. Can't wait to get my 6+ to compare them.
