Strategy Analytics has recently released a report that shows iOS and Android combined make up 96% of Q3 global market shares. In the three-month period ending last month, iOS captured 12.3% market share and Android captured 83.6% global market share. It was just recently revealed that Chinese company Xiaomi has become the world’s third-largest smartphone maker, and these numbers came just a day after the news broke.

In the global smartphone operating system market share, Android takes the number one spot and leads by a long shot with 83.6%. iOS comes in second place holding 12.3%, Microsoft comes in third with 3.3%, and Blackberry holds the fourth spot with only 0.7%. Less than 0.1% belongs to other mobile platforms globally. Executive Director of Strategy Analytics, Neil Mawston stated:

Android’s leadership of the global smartphone market looks unbeatable at the moment. Its low-cost services and user-friendly software remain attractive to hardware makers, operators and consumers worldwide. However, challenges are emerging for Google. The Android platform is getting overcrowded with hundreds of hardware brands, Android smartphone prices are falling worldwide, and few Android device vendors make profits.
Global smartphone shipments have increased annually by 27% to about 320.4 million units. The number last year was 252.9 million units and as you can see, it was a big jump. Take a look at the breakdown below:
