The Pangu jailbreak team has issued an update for the untether package to the iOS 8 jailbreak. Version 0.3 is now available to fix problems with the CPU overworking itself and leading to severe battery drain and even over-heating on 32-bit iOS devices. As far as we can tell, the update doesn't appear to change anything for 64-bit iOS devices. The official change log of this update:

Version 0.3 of this package fixes the issue where, on 32-bit devices (iPod 5, iPhone 4S/5, iPad 2, iPad Mini 1) a specific background process (launchd) would sometimes “spin”, burning CPU and battery, or even heating up.
The update, which was originally posted on Saturday, was pulled by Saurik as it was causing issues on 64-bit iOS devices, but as of Sunday morning, the update looks to be back and available to jailbreakers in Cydia, meaning that the issues plaguing the initial release have been solved. Saurik took to Reddit to explain why the package was initially pulled in the first place:

Some users on 64-bit devices are reporting mild to serious issues with this package. According to the Pangu team, they have changed almost nothing on 64-bit, and have not seen the issue themselves in their testing. We have pulled the package anyway, and the people at Pangu are working on doing a more detailed analysis of the issue.
With the package now available once again, it's safe to install on your devices. So if you're experiencing any overheating issues or severe battery drain, you may want to upgrade to this version of the Pangu untether package via Cydia. It's available right now via Cydia under the "Changes" tab after you refresh your sources. It's hosted in the official Cydia/Telesphoreo repository of Cydia.

So if I understand correctly this changes nothing for 64 bit devices? There's still battery drain on them?

According to the change log of the package, the update is intended to fix a bug that could cause battery drain on 32-bit devices due a bug that could cause extreme battery drain to the extent of actually over-heating the device.

If your 64-bit iOS device is overheating, you have more to worry about than the occasional trickle-drain of jailbreak extensions. This bug doesn't appear to be plaguing 64-bit iOS device users.

Take into consideration that iOS 8.1 itself is more power-hungry than iOS 8.0-8.0.2. So it's not only the jailbreak itself weighing against you.

Some user reported getting 2% the other day I don't remember who but writing somewhat the same comment I'm doing now, but anyways I don't think is JB here.I think is 8.1 firm itself. Lost 2% writing this comment. Not yet JB.

It appears to have no effect, but it's not like it hurts anything.

This update appears to have helped my IP5 greatly. According to that battery tweak (a few articles ago), launchd had been sucking battery. I don't seem to be getting killed half as bad since the update.

And this is why I own a cheap $200 craptop to run windows on for just such a problem.

Of course you could always download a trial version of vmware or parallels and get a the 90 version of windows enterprise and do it on your mac.
    Hmm...
