DigiTimes claims that Intel will be supplying Apple with up to 50% of the modem that will be used inside the iPhone 7. It was previously reported that Apple in a bid to reduce its reliance on Qualcomm for the modem used inside the iPhones will be switching over to Intel modem with the iPhone 7, at least partially.

The report states that while Intel will itself be packaging the chips for Apple, it has contracted TSMC and King Yuan Electronics to manufacture the modem.

Qualcomm’s CEO himself confirmed during the company’s earning call last month that the company is expecting one of its biggest modem buyers to switch to a competing product.

Reports about Apple switching to an Intel modem for the iPhone 7 started making their way to the internet since early 2015 itself. Apple is expected to make use of Intel’s XM 7360 baseband/modem inside the iPhone 7 that is capable of supporting download speeds of up to 450Mbps and upload speeds of up to 100Mbps.

Apple has long relied on Qualcomm for the modem used inside the iPhones. The latter is considered to be a leader in the modem technology, so it is surprising to see Apple switch to an Intel modem for the iPhone 7.

Expected to be unveiled in September this year, the iPhone 7 is rumored to feature waterproofing capabilities. Leaks also point to the handset coming without a 3.5mm audio jack and a slightly redesigned rear sans the antenna lines.

Intel makes good wifi chips at least. No idea about their LTE chips, but I imagine the tech is similar.
